With only a few months left for GATE 2023, students must be thinking of completing their exam preparation. Hence, aspirants must not take this subject for granted and prepare well for it. General Aptitude in a Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) includes Numerical Ability and Verbal Ability. General Aptitude is a common section for almost all subjects in GATE 2023. Students end up focusing on the core technical subjects, taking Aptitude lightly. However, this could lead to you losing crucial marks in this section. The aptitude section has a high weightage in GATE 2023, 15 marks much more than many other technical subjects. Now Aptitude has also been introduced in ESE Paper-1 which makes it all the more important.

The biggest mistake that a student makes while preparing for GATE or other technical exams is delaying the preparation for the Aptitude test because many times students believe that they can do aptitude because they have done it a lot many times during college days for campus recruitment. Aptitude can never be treated as a subject but rather it must be dealt with as breathing space between the heavy load of technical subjects. Aptitude must be made a habit rather than being treated the same way as other technical subjects.

The main challenge in aptitude is that there is no pre-defined course for aptitude so you can never be sure that your preparation is complete. Even if you cover the different chapters given in different books you can still expect an entirely different question in GATE. That is why it is very much necessary to understand the best way to prepare Aptitude.

Q:   I am in 2nd year of electrical engineering. How should I prepare for GATE?
A:
It is good that you have taken the initiative early. That shows your enthusiasm. Now that you have decided to take the test you must reflect the thought "Why exactly do I want to write GATE?" There are two perspectives to that question- 1. Decent score to get a good job 2. For further studies and if you are interested in research, it will be a good start. Since you are in your second year, try joining an institute for guidance and attend the classes. Prefer going to the crowded ones for a better GATE score and low understanding if you want an immediate job. (Or) Go to a private tutorial who have less number of students and give more specific interest in feeding in the basics or the base of fundamental engineering. Here you will learn how things work instead of mugging up formulae. Try searching for applications on your smart phone or laptop that keeps you updated about the exam. Believe me there are lot of such applications. Although still in second year I wont recommend you to waste time in interesting yet not so important topics in your curriculum Now these points that I mention will be of utmost importance. 1. Take down the syllabus of your specified course and stick to the syllabus. 2. Make sure you make one and only one notebook per subject, lets say its the fair notebook and you must keep it as a relic. Whatever you enter into this notebook should be very important points and no rough work or rubbish. Keep a rough note too to do those things. 3. Start watching videos from NPTEL. Its free and the best as far as I can go. 4. Once you start doing it enrol in a class and always attend it. Never miss a class. 5. Go slow take your time you have plenty of it.
Q:   Can I get into IIT Hyderabad without JEE Main?
A:

No, IIT Hyderabad admission 2024 to the BTech course is done only through JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Candidates seeking IIT Hyderabad admissions to the BTech programme are expected to qualify for both JEE Main and JEE Advanced and further go through JoSAA counseling to secure admission. Additionally, to be eligible for the BTech programme, candidates must have passed their Class 12 with 75% aggregate or equivalent. First, we must understand that Numerical Aptitude is nothing more than basic Maths that we learn in our school days like Profit and Loss, Percentage, Interest etc. Verbal Ability is just based on improving your vocabulary like reading comprehension, sentence completion, error correction etc. So, Aptitude is more or less based on common sense rather than fixed formulas and most of the problems are modelled around what we face in our day-to-day lives like discounts and interest.

What amuses me the most is that whenever there is a sale on a website or something like that people can compute prices verbally without even the requirement of a calculator but when the same problem is asked in an exam we have to think a lot about the formulas involved. The problem lies in our view of aptitude as just another subject because in technical subjects there are predefined methods and formulas but in Aptitude, there is no such thing. In order to learn Aptitude, you have to enjoy challenging your brain with puzzles and reasoning exercises. In GATE 2023, too, you can expect 11-12 marks in Numerical Aptitude and Reasoning so being strong in these two domains is a must in order to score high in GATE 2023.

How to prepare for General Aptitude for GATE 2023: Points to keep in mind

There are a few things that must be taken care of while preparing for GATE 2023 General Aptitude:

  • Aptitude cannot be learnt in a matter of days or a month so it must be made a daily habit.
  • Devote an hour each day to practice aptitude. Even if you do 10 questions daily it would be enough.
  • Do not focus too much on learning methods involved in aptitude problems because every problem can be done by a different method.
  • Try to visualise each problem because if you can do so then the problems can sometimes become obvious.
  • Your calculations must be quick because many times aptitude problems will not require a calculator.
  • Try to solve one problem multiple times before giving up and looking at solutions and try to attempt each time from a different perspective. If you are still not able to solve it then try it the next day but do not give up soon. This habit of fighting with a question will enhance your thinking ability and also make you learn better.
  • Solve aptitude questions while taking a break from technical subjects so that your mind gets refreshed.
  • English Movies and TV series do improve vocabulary but overdoing it can hamper your GATE preparation so you must have control over it.
  • You can also cultivate a habit of reading articles or news while travelling and it improves your sentence completion and grammar. It will also help you to make use of the time that generally goes waste.

These things if kept in mind can help you a lot in Aptitude preparation and if you need a general idea of which topics are important in Numerical and Verbal Ability, here is a rough list.

Numerical Ability

Analytical Reasoning, Progressions, Clock and Time Sequence, Simple and Compound Interest, Venn Diagrams, Direction Sense, Profit and Loss, Partnerships, Ages, Time and Work, Time and Distance, Data Interpretation, Blood Relations

Verbal Ability

Grammar, Spotting Error, Reading Comprehension, Sentence Completion, Sentence Improvement, Vocabulary, Critical Reasoning

The list above is just a rough list and questions in the exam can be beyond these topics so it must not be followed strictly. Also, try and cultivate a habit of solving aptitude problems as it will improve your overall IQ level and can help you out with other subjects. I hope this article can guide the aspirants looking for a way through the vastness of the Aptitude syllabus.

The barcode present in the GATE admit card 2026 carries the candidate's information. It is required for a faster verification process and fraud prevention. So, make sure it does not get tampered. Carry multiple copies in case your GATE 2026 hall ticket is torn or tampered.

Candidates who are appearing for the GATE exam must carry a valid ID proof along with a passport-size photograph, transperant water bottle, and pen (blue or black) along with GATE 2026 hall ticket. We advise to carry atleast two to three copies of admit card to the centre.
