Skills required to be a successful lawyer
Every year thousands of students across the country graduate in Law and start their own legal practice, but it is a very challenging profession. So, from studying law to practicing it, you have to learn and imbibe many skills at every turn. Some of these skills are:
Writing or Drafting skills
Every lawyer must have the skill of writing or drafting because drafting is a specific type of legal writing which deals with law or other legal documents. Since it is meant to be understood by others, be sure to develop some important legal drafting skills, such as, logically drafting the document, keeping the writing clear and concise, avoiding grammatical and textual errors in legal text, and editing the document in an orderly and thorough manner. If you have good writing skills, then you just need to hone them further and if not, then you have to pay serious attention to it because without this skill you will not be able to survive in this field.

Oratory skills
One of the most important skills for private practice is to be a good speaker. A potential litigant must have the art of asserting his or her side. Remember, you will do well in this industry only if you are able to express yourself efficiently and clearly. There will be many occasions in your career when you will have to demonstrate your eloquence. Especially while arguing in front of a judge, you have to refute your opponent's point of view by citing full logic, sections and precedents given by the Supreme Court or High Court. And you will be able to do this only when you have the skill to keep your point with full confidence.
Networking skills
Developing both professional and personal relationships is vital to becoming a successful lawyer. For this, build a network of your professional colleagues and superiors. They will give you both advice and guidance for your cases. You will also be able to give some advice to them on many occasions and this practice will increase your understanding in legal matters. So, keep in touch with your college classmates, members of national and local bar associations, and members of social organizations. These can also be helpful in bringing you clients as well as helping you hone your skills.
Lifelong learning
Have you ever wondered why lawyers are called practicing lawyers? This is because it is believed that there is no stage in a career of lawyer where it can be said that now s/he has learned everything in his/her profession or s/he has reached a peak where s/he does not need to learn anything new. Law is a very dynamic field. New guidelines keep coming up for every specific area of law, new Acts are introduced and further procedures are followed accordingly. That is why it is said that a lawyer should be ready to learn for the rest of his life. He should make a habit of reading daily. To become a successful lawyer, you have to develop the habit of reading and writing.
Time management
Punctuality is very important for an aspiring lawyer. Since you are in the early stage of your career, you will be judged on the basis of all such qualities. You have to take care of all such things like meeting your client on time, being present on every date of the case, preparing your documents within the stipulated time frame and submitting them to the court etc. Remember an effective lawyer is one who knows how to manage time.
Always start your career with Sessions and District Court
District and Sessions Court is like a teacher for law graduates. First Class Court teaches and guides you on the nuances of law. Often freshers in the pursuit of success or limelight approach the high courts established in big cities and the Supreme Court of India, which they should not, as it leaves them ignorant of the working of the lower court. Such people do not understand the difference between a brief trial and a session trial. The High Court and the Supreme Court are only appellate courts, where only points of law are considered, while the lower court do the trials and conducts the suit. A law graduate must first understand the process of trial and conduct of a case and then focus on a subject like point of law.
Apart from these, there are many other skills that can help you become a successful lawyer, such as always starting the practice from your home district, becoming an assistant to a senior lawyer, focusing on small cases in the beginning etc. Keeping all these things in mind, you can start your career in this field.
To practice law in India, one has to qualify the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) and obtain the Certificate of Practice (COP) from the Bar Council of India (BCI).

If you have topped while pursuing law there is still some chance. But if you were an average student who have not prepared even once for the exam, it is next to impossible to prepare for the exam in one month.
