CAT 2026 Eligibility for Engineers

CAT 2026 Eligibility Criteria for Engineers: Engineering graduates holding a recognised BE, BTech, or equivalent four-year undergraduate degree are eligible to appear for CAT 2026. However, they must meet the basic graduation percentage requirements. Candidates belonging to the General, EWS, and NC-OBC categories must have a minimum aggregate of 50 per cent marks or equivalent CGPA. Candidates from SC, ST, and PwD categories require a minimum of 45 per cent marks or equivalent CGPA.

Final-year engineering students and candidates who completed their degree exams with pending backlogs or arrears are also eligible to register for CAT exam provisionally. Complete registration details, guidelines, and application rules are available on the official CAT 2026 eligibility article.

CAT 2026 Engineering Eligibility:

  • General / EWS / NC-OBC: Minimum 50% aggregate marks or equivalent CGPA.
  • SC / ST / PwD: Minimum 45% aggregate marks or equivalent CGPA.

CAT 2026 Eligibility for Engineers: Minimum Qualification Required

According to the official CAT 2026 information bulletin, candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree awarded by a university established by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India, or declared to be deemed as a university under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognised by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

Candidate Category Minimum Graduation Requirement
General / EWS / NC-OBC 50 per cent aggregate marks or equivalent CGPA
SC / ST / PwD 45 per cent aggregate marks or equivalent CGPA

The graduation percentage is calculated based on the practice followed by the candidate's university or institution. If grades or CGPA are awarded, the equivalent percentage must follow the certified conversion scheme of the degree-granting institution. The minimum percentage must be met at the undergraduate bachelor's degree level.

CAT 2026 Eligibility in terms of Engineering Backlogs and Ongoing Courses

Can engineering students with backlogs apply for CAT 2026? Yes. Candidates who completed their regular coursework or final-year exams but have uncleared backlogs or arrears are eligible to register and appear for CAT 2026.

In the CAT 2026 application form, candidates with pending backlogs must select "Yes" to the question "Are you in the final year of Bachelor's Degree?" and enter their aggregate percentage scored across all cleared semesters up to the date of registration.

Candidates with backlogs must note the following conditions:

  • Provisional Admission: Eligibility to sit for the test is provisional.
  • Degree Completion Deadline: Candidates must clear all backlog papers and complete all graduation requirements by the date specified by the admitting IIM.
  • Final Percentage Rule: After clearing backlogs, the final consolidated graduation marks must meet the minimum cutoff of 50% (45% for SC/ST/PwD).

CAT Eligibility Criteria for Final-Year Engineering Students

Students in the final year of their BE, BTech, or dual-degree engineering programmes can apply for CAT 2026. Candidates who have completed all final-year exams and are awaiting results are also eligible.

Final-year engineering applicants must report their current year and semester in the application form and enter the aggregate percentage scored up to the latest completed semester.

If selected by an IIM, final-year candidates will receive provisional admission. They must submit a certificate issued on or before the prescribed date, signed by the Principal or Registrar of their college, confirming that all degree requirements (including lectures, practicals, project work, and exams) have been completed.

Does Engineering Branch Matter for CAT Eligibility?

No. CAT 2026 eligibility rules do not differentiate between engineering branches. Candidates from all disciplines are evaluated under the same basic criteria, including:

  • Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)
  • Mechanical Engineering (ME)
  • Civil Engineering (CE)
  • Electrical Engineering (EE)
  • Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE)
  • Chemical Engineering, Information Technology, and other recognised branches

All engineering branches meet the basic requirement for appearing in the exam.

Does College or University Recognition Matter?

Yes. The engineering degree must be awarded by a recognised institution that meets at least one of the following official conditions:

  1. Incorporated by an Act of the Parliament or State Legislature in India.
  2. Declared as a deemed-to-be university under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956.
  3. Possesses an equivalent qualification recognised by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

Degrees awarded by autonomous institutes affiliated with recognised universities meet this requirement. If the candidate's university name is not listed in the application form drop-down menu, the applicant should select "Others" and type the full registered name of the institution.

How Is CGPA Converted to Percentage for CAT Registration?

Many engineering universities award grades in CGPA or CPI rather than numerical percentages. CAT 2026 uses the following rules for conversion:

  • University Conversion Scheme: The percentage conversion must follow the official formula certified by the candidate's university or institute.
  • Absence of Conversion Formula: If the university certifies that it does not have an established conversion formula, the percentage is calculated by dividing the candidate's CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying by 100.

Candidates should obtain the official conversion document from their university, as it may be verified during subsequent selection rounds.

CAT 2026: Documents Required for Engineering Graduates

The document requirements differ between the exam registration stage and the post-exam admission stage.

1. At the CAT 2026 Registration Stage:

  • Scanned passport-size photograph (white background, .jpg/.jpeg format, up to 80 KB).
  • Scanned signature (.jpg/.jpeg format, up to 80 KB).
  • Category certificate (SC, ST, NC-OBC, or EWS), if applicable.
  • PwD certificate, if applicable.

Graduation mark sheets and degree certificates are not uploaded during CAT registration, but exact numerical marks must be entered. For complete upload specifications, see Documents Required for CAT registration and the step-by-step walkthrough on How to fill CAT 2026 application form.

2. At the IIM Interview and Admission Stage:

  • Original semester-wise and consolidated engineering mark sheets.
  • Degree Certificate or Provisional Degree Certificate.
  • University CGPA-to-percentage conversion certificate (if applicable).
  • Bona fide final-year completion certificate signed by the Principal or Registrar (for final-year or result-awaited candidates).

Applicants can track schedule updates and examination windows on the CAT exam dates page.

CAT Eligibility vs IIM Programme Admission Criteria

Meeting the basic CAT eligibility criteria gives a candidate the right to take the test. It does not automatically guarantee shortlisting or admission to individual IIM management programmes.

Each IIM defines its own shortlisting criteria, which may evaluate 10th and 12th board marks, undergraduate academic performance, academic discipline diversity, work experience, and gender diversity. Candidates should review the specific programme criteria on individual institute websites or register via the CAT 2026 registration portal at iimcat.ac.in.

CAT sectional cutoff is the minimum percentile score required in each individual section (VARC, DILR, and QA) to qualify for an institute's selection process. All IIMs have a distinct admission policy, including the sectional cutoffs and overall cutoff scores.
