XAT Syllabus Weightage and Important Topics: XLRI conducts XAT exam for admission to over 250+ B-schools across India. Around 1.5 lakh candidates appear for XAT exam annually. To obtain a good score in this highly competitive exam, candidates must know XAT exam pattern, syllabus, and weightage of topics across sections. The XAT test structure segregates three sections in part 1 and one section (General Knowledge) in part 2.

XAT Exam Pattern 2026

The XAT exam pattern is divided into two parts:

Part 1: This section has a time limit of 170 minutes and determines the candidate's core percentile. It consists of three sections:

• Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VALR): Approximately 26 questions.

• Decision Making (DM): Approximately 21 questions.

• Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (QADI): Approximately 28 questions.

Part 2: This is a 10-minute test focusing on General Knowledge (GK).

• General Knowledge: Approximately 20 questions (8 static GK questions and 12 current affairs questions).

• The GK section does not contribute to the overall cutoff for interview shortlisting, but XLRI uses scores while preparing the final merit.

XAT Marking Scheme

• Correct Answer: +1 mark.

• Incorrect Answer (Part 1): -0.25 marks.

• Un-attempted Questions: A deduction of -0.10 marks is applied for every un-attempted question after 8 un-attempted questions.

• Part 2 (GK): There is no negative marking for incorrect answers.

XAT QADI Weightage and Important Topics

The QADI section of XAT exam requires a solid conceptual foundation and application focus. Questions in this section are often intertwined. A single question may combine concepts from numbers, algebra, ratios, and averages. The table below shows the year-wise distribution of questions for the QADI section based on previous exam trends.

• Data Interpretation (DI): DI forms a major chunk of the section, comprising 6 to 9 questions. Sets involve heavy calculations and require candidates to interpret pie charts, spider charts, tabular charts, and logical data sets.

• Modern Maths: Topics like probability and permutation & combination (PNC) are recommended starting points. Knowledge of these topics helps answer quantitative questions and helps solve complex DI sets.

XAT VALR Weightage and Important Topics

The VALR section tests candidates on critical reasoning, analytical reasoning, English grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. XAT VALR Important Topics

• Reading Comprehension (RC): RC forms the core of the verbal section. XAT passages cover diverse topics. Unlike other exams, XAT includes Poem Comprehension, requiring candidates to interpret abstract language.

• Critical Reasoning: This is the most crucial independent topic to start with when preparing for the verbal section. Strong critical reasoning skills are required to answer standalone questions and logic-based reading comprehension questions.

• Grammar: Grammar questions test the basics. Fill-in-the-blank questions frequently revolve around verbs, tenses, and prepositions. Error detection questions follow a similar pattern and rely on foundational grammar rules.

• Para Jumbles: Para jumble questions are logically structured and follow patterns similar to the CAT exam.

XAT Decision Making (DM) Weightage & Important Topics
