While a number of NEET aspirants have demanded removing the Physics section from the exam, there is more than one reason why the section is important for medical aspirants and professionals. In this article, we have analysed the significance of Physics in NEET.

NEET Aspirants Demand Scrapping of Physics Section

NEET Aspirants Demand Scrapping of Physics Section

NEET or the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test is the single entrance exam for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, Veterinary, and other medical/paramedical courses in India. NEET tests candidates’ on the basis of three subjects or sections, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. While Biology has the highest weightage in the NEET question paper, with 90 out of 180 questions, Physics and Chemistry have an equal number of questions, i.e. 45. While aspirants are demanding that the Physics section be removed from the exam.

According to some NEET aspirants, Physics does not carry much significance in the MBBS curriculum. The concepts of Biology and Chemistry are more relevant for Medical students. Hence, NTA, the conducting body, should concentrate on framing the NEET exam pattern on the basis of either Biology or Chemistry or by reducing the number of questions from the Physics section.

Sample the tweets below to see the NEET aspirants’ thoughts on having Physics as a section in NEET.

Another student is of the view that Physics is not necessary for doctors since they do not use equations of Physics to prescribe medicines to their patients.

Why Physics is Necessary for NEET

Although a number of aspirants are demanding to scrap the Physics section in NEET 2021, there are several Medical students, aspirants and experts who are advocating the importance of Physics in NEET.

Strengthening conceptual clarity: The concepts of Physics help doctors and medical professionals to understand the mechanisms of medical equipments. The concepts of Optics, Sounds, Waves, etc. help doctors during diagnosis, treatment and surgeries. Dr Sarbabhaum Tripathy, a Medical Practitioner says, “Principles of Physics are applicable in every field of medicine more or less….like Bernoulli theorem(flow mechanics) can be applied to blood flow through blood vessels…. similarly, Radiology and radiation therapy, as well as nuclear medicine, have concepts of Physics.”

Without Physics, NEET cut off will be higher: Without or with lower weightage on the Physics section in NEET, more focus would be more on the Biology section. As per the NEET analysis of previous years, the difficulty level of Physics is higher than Biology, even though the latter section has a higher number of questions. With none or a lesser number of questions, the NEET cutoff will tend to get higher.

Checks Pressure-Taking Ability of Candidates: The NEET exam is conducted for a three-hour duration and the NEET question paper carries 180 questions from three sections. It not only checks the subject knowledge of the candidates but also the time management skills, response to pressure situation. Hence, reducing the number of questions or excluding the section will not serve the purpose.

Earlier, the Ministry of Education had stated that NEET 2021 exam pattern may get changed. The exam expected to give relaxations and internal choices. However, the NEET 2021 application forms are yet to be announced. The exam is scheduled to be conducted by NTA on August 1, but the date might get postponed in case the number of COVID-19 cases does not dip.

NTA and the Ministry of HRD are reviewing the situation at present, and are likely to announce the NEET 2021 dates by June end.
