IIT Kanpur's Pioneer Batch

The Pioneer Batch, having witnessed the formative years of IIT Kanpur, remains deeply connected to the vision and values instilled by the founding Director, Dr. P.K. Kelkar. The newly established Pioneering Research & Innovation Award is a tribute to individuals whose contributions have made a significant impact on academia, industry, and society.

Inspired by IIT Kanpur's founding spirit, this annual award celebrates faculty and students whose work exemplifies originality, creative excellence, and real-world impact. Instituted as a lasting legacy of the Pioneer Batch, the award aims to inspire future generations to push the frontiers of knowledge and drive technological progress.

This initiative continues the Pioneer Batch's long-standing tradition of supporting IIT Kanpur. Their notable past contributions include the establishment of the Pioneer Batch Continuing Education Center (PBCEC) in 2000 and two endowments for the Opportunity School in 2010 and 2015, which provide educational support for underprivileged children in the campus vicinity.

Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, said, “The pioneering batch of IIT Kanpur, the class of 1965, have made significant contributions to various initiatives at the Institute and continue giving back. The ‘Pioneering Research & Innovation Award’ is built on the Institute’s founding legacy and would inspire generations of researchers, scholars, and innovators. On behalf of the Institute, I extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to the Class of 1965.”

Prof. Amey Karkare, Dean of Resources and Alumni at IIT Kanpur said, “The Diamond Jubilee of Class of 1965 marks a truly special milestone. With many of them having entered their ninth decade of life, this reunion holds deep significance as an opportunity to leave a lasting impact.
