After JEE session 2 is completed, only those candidates who are aiming for IITs need to start preparing for JEE Advanced after clearing JEE Main. Those who are above the 98th percentile should start preparing for JEE Advanced as soon as possible. Those below this, between the 95th and 98th percentile, should focus on attempting more mock tests and previous year question papers so that they have a better chance of clearing JEE Advanced

Q:   How is the placement scenario at IIT Kanpur?

The institute has not released the placement report incorporating the overall data for the 2026 drive. However, the institute have disclosed the 2026 placement statistics till Phase I. As per the reports, over 250 recruiters participated and presented 1202 offers to the students. 1079 students were placed, of which 15 students have got international placements.

Q:   Can I get admission in IIT Kanpur in BTech if my JEE Advanced rank is between 10000 and 15000?

The cut off rank in Round 6 for B.Sc. in Chemistry is 11824 which is very close to this range. This was for general category under All India quota. Unless the candidate belongs to some other category or domicile, one can not afford to score less than this. With this rank, there is a probability of getting admission however since, the cut offs keep changing from round to round, better ranks definitely increases your chances of getting admission in IIT Kanpur - Indian Institute of Technology.

Candidates seeking admission to BS at IIT Kanpur must have a valid score in JEE Main, JEE Advanced and go through JoSAA counselling for final admission. Admission is completely entrance exam-based and candidates seeking admission can not get into IIT Kanpur with only the scores of JEE Main. JEE Advanced followed by JoSAA counselling is the mandatory requirement. Additionally, to be eligible for the BSc programme, students are required to have passed their Class 12 with at least 75% aggregate with Science subjects (i.e., Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics).

IIT Kanpur JEE Advanced cutoff 2025 ranged between 271 and 10482 for BTech admission for multiple specialisations, based on the last round closing ranks for the General AI category candidates, wherein, according to JEE Advanced cutoff 2025, BTech in Computer Science and Engineering had the toughest competition. Students aiming for admission should strive for a rank of 10482 or preferably lower to increase their chances for admission. Please note that different cutoffs are released for different categories and rounds.

Q:   How can I get admission in IIT Kanpur?

  • After the application process is over; students have to go through various selection rounds for final admission. The institute considers the merit of the candidates for MBA and PhD admission. 
  • For BTech, MDes, MSc, BSc and MTech courses, JEE Advanced, IIT JAM CEED and GATE scores are considered for the selection of candidates.
  • Additionally, admission to PhD and MS by Research is based on UGC NET/ CSIR NET and other national-level exam scores.
  • After the exams, JoSAA, COAP and CCMN Counselling are conducted for seat allotment to BTech, M.Tech and MSc courses. However, a merit list is released by the institute for announcing the names of the candidates shortlisted for certificate, PhD and MS by Research courses followed by a counselling round. Candidates need to pay the admission fee to confirm their admission.
Q:   What is the eligibility for Surge IIT Kanpur Program?

Students-Undergraduate Research Graduate Excellence (SURGE) is an internship programme of IIT Kanpur. The programme is offered to the three categories - SAARC students, Non-IITK students, and IIT Kanpur students. The eligibility to get the SURGE IIT Kanpur internship may vary depending on the category of the students. The minimum eligibility requires the candidates to complete 3rd of BTech course.

Q:   Is studying MTech at IIT Kanpur costly?
A: 

The total tuition fee for M.Tech courses at IIT Kanpur ranges between INR 20,000 to INR 77,000. This fee, however, is sourced from unofficial sources. Hence, is indicative. But as per the official details and fee calculation as per the semester-wise fee break up available for 2021-22 academic year, the total fee for M.Tech stands close to INR 77,000. This amount is  inclusive of Hostel Seat Rent as per the guidelines issued by IIT Kanpur but is not inclusive of the Hostel Admission Fee components since day scholars are not charged hostel admission fee, hostel caution money, water charges and mess establishment charges.

Q:   Can I get into IIT Kanpur with 60% in Class 12?
A: 

No, you can't get admission in IIT Kanpur with 60% in Class 12. The institute accepts students who have a minimum of 75% (for general category) in Class 12. Even for the reserved categories, the minimum score is 65%. Hence, 60% is not enough to get admission in IIT Kanpur UG courses.

Q:   What is the date of JEE Main 2026?
A: 

NTA announced JEE Main 2024 dates. NTA coducted the JEE Main 2024 exam in two sessions. JEE Main 2024 exam date session 1 was January 24 to February 1 while the second session was held from April 4 to 15. Candidates can check JEE Main 2024 exam date session 1 and 2 on this page.  JEE Main 2024 application form session 1 was available from November 1 to December 4. For session 2, NTA released application form on February 2.

Q:   Is it difficult to get into IIT Kanpur for BTech?
A: 

IIT Kanpur is ranked 4 for Engineering by NIRF 2022. Considered under the top 5 eminent institutes in the country for Engineering education, the cutoffs are comparatively higher. In JoSAA Round 6 of 2022, BTech CSE was the top course with the highest cutoff score of 237. For other courses, such as Aerospace Engineering, the cutoff score stood at 4683 in the R-6. Hence, it is true that it is difficult to get into IIT Kanpur. However, with the right preparation and study strategy, it is never impossible to achieve the goal.
