Statistics syllabus is designed to gather, organise, and interpret data. All components of this procedure are covered in the Statistics course, including data collecting and planning in terms of the poll and experiment design. There is also a branch known as mathematical statistics that focuses more on the mathematical aspects of the subject.

Many institutions around the country offer Statistics as part of their curriculum. Statistics is either a three-year or four-year course depending on the programme. A degree in Statistics can lead to various lucrative career options.

Here are some of the important facts about the Statistics syllabus:

BSc in Statistics is a six-semester course

Undergraduate statistics courses are known as BSc (Statistics) or Bachelor of Science in Statistics. The BSc in Statistics programme covers all parts of data collection, organisation and analysis. It delves deep into the concepts of questionnaire and experiment design.  

BTech in Statistics is an eight-semester course: 

Bachelor of Technology in Mathematics and Computing is a Computer Science undergraduate programme. The courses include topics in pure and applied mathematics including several core statistics concepts. 

Scope in India

Statistics may be used in a variety of industries, including business, agriculture, government, corporate, computer engineering and health sciences, among others. One can also enrol for the Civil Services, Indian Administrative Services, and Indian Economic Services examinations armed with a degree in Statistics.

Career Options after Statistics Course

After completing your BSc in statistics, you can also apply for the Civil Services, Indian Statistical Services and  Indian Economic Services exams. Other career avenues after a degree in statistics include finance, analytics, software development, actuarial science and other related fields.

BTech Statistics Syllabus: List of Subjects

The following are the major subjects to be studied in the bachelor's degree in statistics. The semester wise syllabus may differ from college to college, but the subjects and topics are more or less the same.

The course on statistical methods covers statistics from basics to advanced levels. This lays the groundwork for a solid foundation in the subject. 

Economics

Students are required to learn the relationship between economics and statistics and base their decisions on a sound knowledge of both disciplines. The subject offers an insight to the learners to study statistics in practical scenarios. 

Statistical Quality Control (SQC) and Operations Research

This subject is based on various quality tools and management, and measurement systems in statistics. Further students conduct operations research and analysis as a hands-on approach.

Probability

Probability as a subject and its implications are taught in the statistics course. Students are required to understand the practical approach of probability to be applied in all the work fields.

Mathematics

Mathematical topics and concepts are to be studied thoroughly to have a command of the subject of statistics as a whole. Statistics make the most practical use of mathematics and that is why it is one of the core subjects included in the study.

Geology

The geological principles offer an all-inclusive approach and students would be able to become better at analysing and forecasting weather and the related phenomenon of earth. 

Sociology

This subject offers a study on sociological theory and thoughts. The contents to be studied are the origin of sociological theory, general studies, agrarian sociology and methods of social research. This subject helps carry out quality surveys.

Physics

Science students pursuing degree courses in Statistics prefer to take physics as it offers an understanding of classical mechanics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, electromagnetic theory, relativity theory etc.

Agriculture science

Agriculture science as an elective subject includes agroclimatology, agronomy, irrigation, fertilisers, and cropping systems.

Statistics Entrance Exams

Admissions to BSc Statistics in India are conducted at the university or college level. There are no National or State level entrance exams for getting admission in B.Sc Statistics. Some of the entrance exams conducted by different Universities all over India are ISI exam by Indian Statistical Institute, GSAT, BHU UET, DSAT, and SUAT.

These entrance exams are conducted in the format of Multiple Choice Questions. The students are required to score marks above the cut-off in order to secure their seats. The difficulty level of these entrance exams ranges from high to moderate. The subjects to be studied include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Statistics.

Statistics Syllabus for Distance Learning Courses

The students also take distance learning programs for the statistics course so that they could pursue education at their convenience. The fee for pursuing distance learning may range from five thousand to one lakh which is lower than full-time courses. The syllabus and the examination pattern of distance programs are similar to the full-time regular courses but differ according to Universities. The duration of distance learning can be one or two years depending upon the course or diploma chosen.

Of the numerous distance programs, some of the most prominent ones are IGNOU, Osmania University, Acharya Nagarjuna University,  and Guwahati University. The students can enrol themselves for the diploma after completing the eligibility criterion.
