NIRF 2025 Rankings are out. As per the latest NIRF 2025 rankings, IIT Kharagpur ranks #5 under the category 'Engineering'.

QS World University Rankings 2026 have been released. According to the same, IIT Kharagpur ranks at #215 under the category 'World Universities'.

The GATE 2026 registrations are ongoing for admission to ME/MTech courses, and the deadline for registration with late fee payment has been extended to Oct 13, 2025. The GATE 2026 exam will be conducted on Feb 7, Feb 8, Feb 14, and Feb 15, 2026.

A few more updates are given below:

The JEE Main 2026 registration process for the first session for IIT Kharagpur admission to BTech, BArch, and BPlan courses is expected to start in Oct 2025.
The IIT JAM 2026 registration has now begun for admission to the MSc course. The last date to register is tentatively Oct 12, 2025. Furthermore, the exam will be held on Feb 15, 2026.

IIT Kharagpur Highlights 2025

IIT West Bengal is one of the renowned institutes present in India and was established in 1951. It has been ranked 5th and 6th by the NIRF 2025 under the Engineering and Overall categories, respectively. IIT Kharagpur offers UG, PG and PhD courses via its multiple departments and schools of study. The courses are offered in the streams of Management, Law, Engineering, etc.

IIT KGP is ranked 215 by the QS World University Rankings 2026, 5th by the QS World University Rankings: Southern Asia 2024, and 59th by the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2024. IIT Kharagpur provide placement opportunities in top companies and sectors. During the 2023-24 placement cycle, a total of 700 offers were made on the first day itself.

Out of all the offers made, 6 were made with a package of more than INR 1 crore per annum. The University of Warwick (WMG), National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), Purdue University, and the University of Torino have entered into collaborative agreements with the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.

IIT KGP is famous for BTech, and MTech courses. The academic session in the Kharagpur IIT College is divided broadly into 2 semesters. Each has approximately 20 weeks of duration: a Spring Semester (January-April) and an Autumn Semester (July-November). IIT Kharagpur admissions are entrance-based. Kharagpur IIT College History

Some of the historical facts of IIT KGP are listed below:

Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur’s history dates back to 1946 when a committee was set up by Sir Jogendra Singh (Member of the Viceroy’s Executive Council) to look after the creation of new higher technical institutions for post-World War II development of the country.
After this, a 22-member committee was formed, headed by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar, which proposed the establishment of major institutions in the four quarters of India, along the lines of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.
The report also suggested that the institutes should be established as early as possible with the ones in the East and West of India to be started immediately.
After the recommendations of the committee, the first Indian Institute of Technology was established in Esplanade East, Calcutta as the Eastern Higher Technical Institute in May 1950.
In September 1950, it shifted to its permanent campus at Hilji, Kharagpur. The institute changed its name to the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) on August 18, 1951, before its official inauguration.
Hilji was used as a detention camp during British rule, making IIT KGP probably the only institute in the world that started its journey in a prison house.
IIT KGP is the fourth oldest technical institute in West Bengal.
IIT Kharagpur University which started its journey with over 224 students and 42 teachers, has now become one of the best Engineering institutes of the country.

In addition, 27% of separate reservations are there for the Other Backward Classes category students. After doing BTech from IIT Kharagpur, students can become Computer Science Engineers, Civil Engineers, Ceramic Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Production Engineers, and others.

Some of the top companies such as Amazon, Barclays, KPMG, and others recruit MTech students. The college is ranked 5th and 6th by the NIRF 2024 under the Engineering and Overall category, respectively. Hence, the college is top-ranked for BTech.

IIT Kharagpur Admission Process and Important Dates 2025

The modes of IIT Kharagpur course admissions are online and offline. Admission to various courses is based on merit and scores of entrance tests. The accepted entrance exams are GATE, JEE Main, JEE Advanced, and others. Candidates must first visit the JEE Main website. Then appear for the JEE Main exams. Then take part in the counselling round and with valid scores pay the admission fee in the selected and the allotted college.
