NIFT offers PhD programmes for candidates who wish to pursue a doctoral programme. This PhD programme is offered through NIFT Head Office, Delhi. The PhD programme at NIFT is an application of knowledge in the areas of Design, Management and Technology with reference to textile, fashion, lifestyle, apparel, craft and any other related field. NIFT offers PhD programmes for candidates who wish to pursue higher studies in the field of design, fashion, craft, technology, textile, etc. NIFT application form for NIFT PhD opens in December and the exams are conducted in April or May. The exam has multiple stages and the final merit list is released on the NIFT website. The duration for NIFT PhD for Full time scholar is 4 years. NIFT PhD scholar who wish to study part time have to submit their thesis within a period of six years.
NIFT PhD written exam test Research Aptitude, Communication skills, Logical Reasoning, etc. MCQ and Descriptive questions will be asked in the exam. Duration of the exam will be 1 hour 45 minutes.

Commonly asked questions
Candidates will be able to check the cutoff for NIFT Delhi on the website of NIFT: nift.admissions.nic.in. The opening and closing rank of all the programmes is given on this page. This year, NIFT 2026 cutoff is expected to be on the lower side.
The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) will conduct NIFT 2026 seat allotment for SPOT Round in the last week of July 2026.
Follow the steps given below to withdraw from the NIFT Counselling.
- Go to the NIFT admission portal
- Log in to the portal
- If will see an option for seat withdrawal.
- Click on the option and confirm the withdrawal process
- Once the withdrawal is confirmed, the allotted seat will be canceled.
The information provided by the candidate when filling out the NIFT 2026 application form will be verified by NIFT officials before any candidate is considered for admission.
The verification of original documents will be conducted at the campus when the candidate reports for the alloted regular programme. When reporting for verification, along with the original documents, the candidate must also bring with them self-attested photocopies.
Also, if the certificates are in any other language than Hindi/ English, then a certified translation in Hindi/ English produced duly verified by the issuing institution/ gazetted officer. If the candidate fails to produce the translation, the candidate may be denied admission.
There are 20 NIFTs that will accept NIFT 2026 Scores for admission purposes. These institutes are known as participating colleges.
However, in addition to the participating colleges, there are other private colleges that will also consider NIFT 2026 scores for admission to their UG and PG design courses. The candidates are urged to go through the list of result-sharing institutes.

NIFT PhD Admission Process
- Research Proposal: The completed application form has to be submitted along with an outline of Research Proposal in prescribed word limit prescribed by NIFT. Research Proposal is the most important part of PhD Application. The proposed research can be related to any previous work/studies carried out by the candidate.
- Shortlisting, Selection, and Preliminary Registration: Candidates will be shortlisted and invited for a presentation and personal interview based on the research proposal and application form. Based on the presentation and personal interview, the final selection of the candidates for the preliminary registration for NIFT PhD will be made. NIFT can decide the mode of screening and testing for shortlisting.
- Written test & Interview: Candidates who are shortlisted after step 1 will be called for the written test and personal interview. Written test and interview will check the candidates’ communication skills, academic disposition, aptitude for research and research co-curricular activities. Subject Areas for written test are placed in the prospectus. The test shall be for two hours with descriptive/objective-type questions.
- Merit List: The merit list of the candidates will be made on the basis of total score of written test. The list will be released on the NIFT website.
- Research Proposal Presentation: Candidates whose name appear in the Merit List, will have to appear for research proposal presentation and interview. The dates of the presentation will be as per the timeline shared by NIFT.
- Admission: Admission will be offered to the candidates who have cleared the last round and on the basis of number of seats available for the academic year.

Exemptions from NIFT PhD Written Test
The following type of candidates will be exempted from giving NIFT Written exam for PhD.
- Master's Degree holders with a minimum 10 years of professional experience (teaching/ working) in the areas of research relevant to NIFT.
- Master's Degree holders who have a minimum 10 years of experience and have cleared and hold a valid score UGC NET, CEED, CSIR (JRF), similar tests.
What should NIFT PhD Research Proposal have?
- The research proposal must include Statement of topic of research (not more than 100 words), focus of research and research problem.
- Review of Literature should not be more than 200 words.
- All admission applications must be accompanied with the research proposal and be submitted with the consent of the NIFT PhD supervisor (Research Proposal format 1 and consent of NIFT PhD supervisor-format 2).

There is no fixed number of mock tests one should take before the NIFT Entrance Exam. A candidate should take at least one mock test daily for the NIFT Entrance Preparation. 10-15 mock tests will really help in preparing for the exam.
