GATE 2017 began from February 4 and was further be held on February 5, 11 and 12. This year, more than 9 lakh students took the exam across India and Abroad. In 2017, GATE was held in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and United Arab Emirates.
The three hour long paper of GATE 2017 included questions of both multiple-choice and numerical answer nature. For the former, aspirants need to choose the answer from the given choices while for the latter, candidates are supposed to enter a number as the answer using a virtual keypad.

Pre - Exam:
Shiksha spoke to few candidates before the exam to get an idea about their preparations and more. Ankit Kumar, a resident of Delhi NCR said, “ Although I have prepared well for the exam, I am a bit nervous about the general aptitude part of the paper as my grammar is weak”.
Another GATE 2017 taker, Rahul Agarwal from Kolkata was sounding pretty confident about his preparations. He said, “ I have given my heart and soul to this exam. So I am hoping to come out with flying colors”.
Ayushi Singh from Delhi said, “ Since there were no changes in the exam pattern last year, it is expected that there will be some this time. Though I am well prepared, I am expecting the maths paper to be difficult’.
Post Exam:
Vaibhav Paliwal, who appeared for the exam in the second slot, said, " I appeared for the Mechanical Engineering paper and I found the exam to be pretty easy. There were no surpises in the paper. All the questions were from the syllabus. There was nothing thaat I can call unexpected. The paper was smooth". Vaibhav is a graduate is currently preparing for his Coal India Ltd entrance exam.
Sharing similar thoughts, another aspirant, Amit Dwivedi said, "The paper was easier than what I expected it to be. The paper pattern was different from previous papers. The exam was based on logical approach rather than technical approach".
"I could solve 52 questions out of the total number of 65 questions. There were 3-4 questions that I found a bit difficult.There were 30 questions of 1 mark and 35 questions of 2 marks each. The paper was divided into two sections. The first one was the technical section worth 85 marks, while the second section was the general aptitude section of 15 marks", added another GATE 2017 aspirant, Madhur Kumar.
Madhur Singhal who took the exam on Feb 11 said, " I appeared for session 2 of the electrical engineering paper. I found the paper to be pretty tough and lengthy. There were a lot of questions from synchronous and power electronics and control. The level of the aptitude was quite high. Most of the questions took almost 5-10 minutes for solving. I could solve around 49 questions".
GATE 2017 was conducted by IIT Roorkee, the organizing institute of the exam. The exam was held in two slots – from 9 am to 12 noon and 2 pm to 5 pm.
