GATE 2026 Normalisation Process: The normalisation process in GATE 2026 is done to ensure fairness in the exam difficulty across sessions. This year, IIT Guwahati conducted the GATE exam on multiple dates - Feb 7, 8, 14, and 15 in two shifts. Since all the papers were held in different sessions, hence the difficulty level may differ across different shifts. Some shifts may be easier while other shifts may be tougher. To ensure fairness for all candidates, the authorities implement GATE normalisation process while preparing GATE result 2026. IIT Guwahati will announce the result along with GATE minimum qualifying marks on March 19. Candidates can refer to the GATE 2026 result date for more updates regarding the schedule.

Latest Update:

IIT Guwahati has released GATE question paper, response sheet, and answer key on Feb 22. Candidates can use marking scheme to evaluate their scores and predict using GATE college predictor.

GATE Normalisation Process

Candidates must know that GATE normalisation will be based on the raw marks, scores. The raw marks are the marks obtained by the candidate in their specific GATE exam, out of 100. On the other hand, the GATE score is calculated using a formula out of 1000.

GATE 2026 normalisation process is done for the papers that are conducted in multiple shifts - Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Civil Engineering (CE). Candidates who have attempted this specific paper will receive their results as per normalisation method. Thus, raw marks (for single session paper) and normalised marks (for multi-session test papers) will be used for computing GATE scores, based on qualifying marks.

GATE 2026 Normalisation Process: Mathematical Formula

Considering the above information, the authorities will use the following formula for calculating the normalised marks for the multi-session papers.

How is GATE 2026 Score Calculated?

The scores for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering are calculated based on the following formula. The authorities will also release GATE 2026 cutoff along with scores and topper's list.

How are GATE scores calculated using the normalisation process?

To help you understand the GATE 2026 normalisation process, here's a simple explanation.

  • Let's take two classrooms: class A and B having the same test. However, both the question sets are different and tough at different level.
  • The class "A" received a tough paper, on the other hand, the class "B" question paper was easy.
  • The topper of class "A" got 60 marks, and the class average was 30
  • On the other hand, the topper of class "B" got 95 marks and the class average was 70.

If we look at the raw marks, then students of class "A" can lose. This is where the normalisation process works. Here, the authorities check the performance of both top students. This shows that the paper was roughly 35 marks tougher at the top level. Now, let's take a look at the class average. This confirms that the difficulty level of class "A" question paper was tough compared to class "B."

GATE Normalisation Process

Now, let's say you've scored 50 marks in GATE. Without normalisation, your peformance might not be top notch than the average kid who got 70 marks in class B. However, with normalisation, it balances and boosts your marks, as you have performed well against a hard paper, and your normalosed score might instantly reach 57 -60 marks, which is not actually bad. Thus, you can be fairly, compared to the performance of class "B" students.

So, in short, the GATE normalisation process turns your raw marks into a fair score and helps you to secure a good chance for counselling and admission.

GATE 2026 Marks Vs Rank (Expected)

According to the last year's cutoff trends, toppers scores analysis, and other factors, candidates can check expected GATE 2026 marks vs rank details below -

Rank (GATE AIR)

72- 77 marks

2000 to 5000

70 - 75 marks

5000 - 10000

60 - 65 marks

 Why GATE Marks are Normalised?

  • The GATE exam authorities use this Normalisation process because the examination is conducted in multiple sessions for some papers.
  • Exams held in multiple sessions because most PSU recruitments are for these particular branches.
  • Candidates for MTech specialisations prefer some of the major streams.
  • This process is used to stabilise the difficulty level of the various sessions.
  • The exam authorities also keep in mind that the number of candidates allotted in each session is of the same magnitude for the same multi-session paper.

The candidates can calculate their probable scores in the exam after understanding the GATE 2026 normalisation process. Candidates are required to go through the GATE  Answer key and match it with responses marked by them.

No, students can not get direct admission in Cluster Innovation Centre MSc. The college only accepts CUET PG score. Hence, having a GATE scorecard will not come in handy during admissions.

If you are seeking admission in NIT Surathkal MTech, then GATE is mandatory. Students applying for non-MTech programmes do not need to appear for GATE. For M.Tech however, GATE followed by the centralised counselling is mandatory.
