The syllabus for JEE Advanced is vast. Also, sometimes there is less time for reading theory in-depth as well as to solve questions well in the exam. Thus, one with a smart approach can do better in exams. This article will help you get new ways to solve problems, a revision approach and describe what could be the best strategy to self evaluate so that one can easily score well.
The first step is to pick the correct study material. If one has enrolled in any big institute and coaching classes, you will have a lot to study and revise. For those who are not or the one who thinks the coaching material isn't enough, I would suggest studying from below mentioned books:
Explore colleges based on JEE Advanced
- Physics: H C Verma, D. C Pandey, I E Irodov, NCERT, Cengage Learning
- Physical Chemistry: Pradeep Publication, NCERT and N Awasthi
- Organic Chemistry: Himanshu Pandey, Morrison and Boyd
- Inorganic Chemistry: NCERT, Pariksha Bodh, J D Lee and Cengage Learning
- Maths: R D Sharma, S L Loney and A Das Gupta.
Calculus, Conic Section, Electromagnetism, Thermodynamics, Periodic Table (s,p,d,f) block elements, Salt Analysis, Chemical Bonding, Binomial Theorem, Mechanics, Simple Harmonic Motion and Wave Theory and Ray Optics are focus points for JEE Advanced. Around 40% of the syllabus is based on these topics. Though, I would suggest being ready for at least 80% syllabus. Because, even if one has studied the whole syllabus but didn't bother going into the depth of the theory, the paper will be tough for them.
One should definitely start solving previous years’ question papers. Try not to pick the questions individually. Solve it in bulk with a restricted time limit.
Moving on to the revision, it is really tough to study things again because you will have a bunch of topics at last to carry yourself. I would suggest starting to solve the questions for revision. Focus on the topics you know in-depth. If you have left any topic, I would suggest not starting with something new. Even a 75% score will bring you in the top 800. Moreover, short notes are the key in Physics and Maths. For Chemistry, try to read the summary or mark the important points with a highlighter and read-only them to wind up. Again, it's the problem solving which will earn you marks in the exam. If you are able to solve the problems by just reading the summary and formulas of the chapter, don't bother reading the whole chapter.
Self-evaluation, analysis and marks improvement go hand-in-hand. In order to gain better marks in every next text or evaluation, you must keep check of two things:
- Study Pattern: Check whether the pattern in which you are covering the syllabus is less time consuming and more rewarding? Or whether you are able to solve problems with the theory you? Are you able to solve the paper in less time? In this way, you will keep on optimizing your process and hence, will get an idea of your preparations.
- Problem-solving: Problem-solving is only rewarding when you do that in limited time and without seeing solutions and answers. It is tough initially not to look for answers but with time, one should learn this art and follow it till the main exam. Also, don't worry about the test marks if they are low initially, With consistent focus, even one year is sufficient.

No, same questions never get repeated in IIT JEE exam. However, questions with similar concepts can find places in the exam. The question paper of JEE Advanced is prepared considering the syllabus and exam pattern.

You will not be eligible for admission as preparatory ranks are not considered under round 1. Since you have already qualified to appear for JEE (Advanced), all you need to do is meet the second criterion and apply for round 2, which will be only conducted if seats from round 1 remain vacant.

Yes, you can still get admission in Round 2 if you meet eligibility criteria to appear in JEE (Advanced) and have a valid JEE (Mains) rank. Also, you must have scored 60% or above in class 12th. For SC/ST/PwD category students, 55% or above is required.

No, candidates need not pay any fees to participate in JEE Adv counselling. However, once the seat is allotted, candidates will need to pay approximately INR 35,000 (less for reserved category) as a seat acceptance fee and around INR 20,000 as partial admission fees.
