CLAT Pass Percentage: The Common Law Admission Test is conducted to select candidates for the Law Courses offered by the National Law Universities. The number of seats available for undergraduate courses is around 3,500, but over 90,000 candidates apply for CLAT. 

Getting into an NLU is the dream of all aspirants who want to pursue a career in law. The NLUs conduct the CLAT every year through the Consortium formed for the same purpose. What is the CLAT pass percentage?

CLAT pass percentage is the marks required to clear the exam but it depends on the difficulty of the CLAT question paper. It differs from year to year. There is no single fixed CLAT passing percentage that a candidate has to achieve to qualify for admission to an NLU. CLAT is a competitive exam and the selection is based on the marks scored and rank in the exam. A candidate's performance is reflected through their score and rank, and admission depends on factors such as NLU preferences, category, seat availability and the counselling process.

Does CLAT Have a Passing Percentage?

No. The Consortium of National Law Universities does not prescribe a universal “passing percentage” for CLAT UG. Candidates are ranked based on their performance in the examination, and the subsequent counselling process is used for seat allotment.

This makes CLAT different from an examination where candidates simply need to cross a predetermined pass mark.

CLAT Pass Percentage is Different from Percentage Required in Class XII

Candidates who want to fill the CLAT 2027 registration form need to score at least 45% and 40% marks in the qualifying examination (based on their category). These marks do not differ for different Boards.

These marks determine whether a candidate satisfies the qualifying examination requirement. They do not mean that a candidate can score 45% in CLAT and automatically qualify for an NLU.

Candidates should always check the eligibility criteria applicable to the particular admission year because individual admission rules can be revised.

How Is the CLAT Score Calculated?

The Consortium mention the CLAT marking scheme under the paper structure. As per the official portal, the CLAT total marks is 120 and the duration of the exam is 120 minutes.
There will be 120 questions, and 1 mark is assigned to each question. But in case of an incorrect answer, the CLAT also mention negative marking. For each incorrect answer, the Consortium deducts 0.25 marks from the candidate's aggregate.

CLAT Pass Percentage Vs CLAT Rank

For a candidate targeting an NLU, rank is generally much more useful than a generic passing percentage. If two candidates satisfy the CLAT qualification and fill the form. But their admission to the NLUs will depend on the score and rank of the candidate.

Candidates should note that the CLAT rank depends on the comparative performance of the candidates in the exam. The CLAT marks depend on the individual performance but the CLAT rank depends on the comparative performance of all the candidates.

Is There a Minimum CLAT Score for NLU Admission?

There is no single minimum CLAT score that applies to every NLU and every candidate. The effective admission cutoff depends on the particular admission cycle and can vary according to:

• NLU
• Candidate category
• NLU preferences
• Number of available seats
• Reservation policy
• Domicile requirements, wherever applicable
• Counselling round
• Candidate choices

Therefore, a score that resulted in admission to one NLU cannot automatically be treated as the required score for every other NLU.
