IIT Kanpur Develops Advanced Metamaterial Cloaking System

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has launched the Anālakṣhya Metamaterial Surface Cloaking System (MCS), an innovation in defence technology. This revolutionary system is a textile-based broadband Metamaterial Microwave Absorber designed to deliver near-perfect absorption of electromagnetic waves across a wide frequency spectrum. Its advanced capabilities offer significant enhancements in stealth technology, effectively reducing detection risks by Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging.

With its ability to cloak surfaces and objects from radar systems, Anālakṣhya represents a monumental step forward in strengthening defence and surveillance operations. The Anālakṣhya MSCS is the innovative creation of Prof. Anantha Ramakrishna from the Department of Physics, Prof. Kumar Vaibhav Srivastava from the Department of Electrical Engineering, and Prof. J. Ramkumar from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kanpur. This technology was developed in collaboration with their team of skilled students, including Mr. Gagandeep Singh, Dr. Kajal Chowdhary, and Dr. Abhinav Bhardwaj, along with other PhD scholars.

The event was graced by Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, AVSM, VM, VSM, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Central Air Command, Indian Air Force, as the Chief Guest, and Lt. Gen. Cherish Mathson, PVSM, SM, VSM, and Air Marshal Rajesh Kumar, PVSM, AVSM, VM, ADC, as the Guests of Honor. The occasion was further enriched by the presence of Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director IIT Kanpur, Prof. Tarun Gupta, Dean of Research and Development, IITK, and distinguished defense leaders including Air Vice Marshal Praveen Bhatt, Director of Meta Tattva Systems Pvt. Ltd., Air Commodore Ajay Chaudhari, and Brigadier Abhinandan Singh.

The Anālakṣhya MSCS delivers near-perfect wave absorption across a wide spectrum, greatly improving the ability to counter Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging. Additionally, it offers effective protection against missiles equipped with radar guidance systems. Designed specifically for modern warfare, this state-of-the-art technology enhances operational capabilities, equipping India’s armed forces with advanced tools to maintain strategic superiority and safeguard national security. Its innovative design is crafted to meet critical operational needs, making it an indispensable asset for modern warfare and surveillance operations.
