The report states, "Engineering & Technology is the third major stream with 40.19 lakh students enrolled. The share of male students enrolled in Engineering & Technology is 71.4 per cent whereas female enrolment is 28.6 per cent. This stream has 17 sub-streams like Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering etc. The top five sub-streams are Mechanical Engineering with 8.8 lakh students, Computer Engineering with 8.3 lakh students, Electronics Engineering with 6.5 lakh students, Civil Engineering with 5.9 lakh students and Electrical Engineering with 4.18 lakh students enrolled".
IITs, collectively, offer B.Tech, M.Tech, Dual Degree and PhD programmes in more than 100 specialisations. Computer Science Engineering is one of the most popular specialisations among students wanting to pursue B.Tech. Every year, more than 90 per cent of candidates qualifying JEE Advanced opt for this engineering specialisation at the UG level. The second and third in line are Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering, respectively.

Eligibility Criteria for IIT Courses
To be eligible for admissions to B.Tech and Dual degree programmes at IITs, candidates should secure passing marks in the qualifying examination. The authorities have waived off the requirement of obtaining at least 75 per cent marks in class 12 board exams for admission to IITs due to COVID-19. Admissions to the above courses at IITs is based on two engineering entrance exams and a joint counselling process.
Step 1: Joint Entrance Exam ( JEE Main)
Step 2: JEE Advanced
Step 3: Joint Seat Allocation Authority ( JoSAA Counselling)
For admissions to M.Tech programmes, candidates need to have qualified Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering ( GATE). Bachelor degree holders in Engineering and those who are in the final year of such programmes will be able to apply for GATE.
Admissions & Cut-offs for IIT Courses
During JoSAA counselling, the IITs release round-wise and category-wise cut-offs for admissions to B.Tech and Dual Degree programmes. After appearing for JEE Advanced, the next step is to appear for JoSAA counselling. JoSAA refers to joint seat allocation for admissions to 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 23 IIITs and 23 Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other-GFTIs).

Commonly asked questions
The National Testing Agency (NTA) will declare the JEE Mains result 2026 in the form of percentile scores. Candidates can check here the previous year JEE Main marks vs percentile data to understand how much is 120 marks in JEE Main percentile.
As per the last year JEE Main marks vs percentile analysis, 120 marks would be around 95 to 97 percentile. However, the exact JEE Main 2025 percentile marks 120 would vary depending upon the highest number scored by the candidate in a particula shift and the total number candidates appeared in that particular shift.
Candidates who do not score above JEE Main cutoff marks are eligible to take admissions in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs but not IITs. To appear in the admission process for IITs, candidates need to get marks above than the JEE Main cutoff and appear in JEE Advanced exam.
NTA does not release marks vs rank data officially. The data available on the internet is provided by various experts and is subject to changes due to various variables.
Commonly asked questions
Yes, candidates are required to submit proof of domicile in case availing the home-state quota in NITs. It is only NIT where admission is offered against the Home State quota.
Candidates home state is determined based on the state from which you appear for your 12th board exam and on the basis of the state to which you belong.
No. There is no qualifying percentile in JEE Main. However, the candidates who want to appear in JEE Advanced will have to get a minimum qualifying percentile in JEE Mains. This minimum qualifying percentile is announced with the JEE Main session 2 reult.
The JEE Advanced 2026 cutoff will be released with the results of JEE Advanced 2026. Until then, candidates can check below the JEE Advanced cutoff from the previous years:
The JEE Advanced 2025 cutoff of the common rank list is 20.56%; 18.50% for the GEN-EWS rank list and OBC-NCL rank list; 10.28% for SC, ST, and PwD rank lists across all categories; and 5.14% for Preparatory course rank lists.
All those candidates who score above the cutoff marks in their respective categories can register for JoSAA counselling to participate in the IIT seat allotment process. Note that qualifying the JEE Advaced cutoff will not guarantee a seat in the IITs. Various factors are at play while allotting seats in the IITs. These factors include the demand for a course and IIT, the number of seats on offer, the reservation criteria, etc.
Commonly asked questions
With 95 percentile in JEE Mains, your chances of getting into a NIT are high, but high-demand courses may not be available.
As per the JEE Main 2023 cutoff data released by the NTA, PwD category has the lowest cutoff of 0.0013527. The highest cutoff is for general category which is 90.7788642. The PwD candidates scoring above 0.0013527 NTA score are eligible to appear in JEE Advanced for admission to IITs. The PwD cutoff has been lowered in 2023 to 0.0013527 which was 0.0031029 in the year 2022.
The cutoff for NITs vary for various branches and also category of students. Specialised branches like computer Science and electronics engineering has higher cutoff in comparison to other branches. Similarly, JEE Main cutoff for general category candidates is higher in comparison to OBC-NCL and SC, ST candidates. Candidates can check the previous year JEE Main cutoff below for some top NITs and branches. For detailed cutoff report, candidates can check Shiksha page.
