 Comments of Paper:

  • ME paper I had more concept based questions than only formula based questions.
  • Compared to last year, Engineering Mechanics weightage has come down while it is increased in Strength of Materials, Thermal Science and manufacturing Science.
  • In remaining topics IIT Roorkee has followed almost the same weightage compared to last year.
  • In general the overall difficulty level of the paper is higher than last year.

(Based on student test experiences in the stream of ME - Afternoon session)
  • In remaining topics IIT Roorkee has followed almost the same weightage compared to last year.
  • In general the overall difficulty level of the paper is moderate than last year.

GATE 2017 Exam Analysis by MV Reddy, President, TIME Education

Question Pattern

A higher proportion of Numerical Questions appeared in ME Stream and it was also observed that there were more Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions in comparison to last year. Both the above factors made the exam slightly tricky as there were lesser number of direct Theoretical questions and Multiple-Choice-Questions(MCQ's), which are usually easier to attempt than Fill-in-the-blank questions.

Exam Interface

The exam interface for GATE’17 was similar to last year. With the Virtual Calculator already being put on GATE 2017 website, students who had had sufficient practice of the calculator on the website were at a slight advantage.

Overall the user interface of GATE’17 was mostly similar to the one provided in the Mock GATE exams provided by T.I.M.E. where a student gets a complete view of his attempted questions along with questions marked for review.

Exam Analysis

Mechanical Engg.

(a) Forenoon Slot: There were good no.of questions from Strength of Materials, Thermodynamics &Fluid Mechanics, but substantial weightage was given to Manufacturing Technology. Questions from Design Part were moderate in number as well as the complexity.Level of questions in Engg. Maths & Aptitude was easy and most of the questions could be easily answered.

Overall, the paper was between Moderate to Difficult as compared to that of last year.

Pre - Exam Analysis:

According to  M V Reddy, President, T.I.M.E Education, there are no surprises expected in the exam this year. He said, “ We are not expecting any kind of surprises in the exam this year. GATE is a pretty stable exam and unlike other exams, the exam pattern is not expected to change with every passing year. The papers would be similar to what it was last year”.

“At this hour, aspirants should not start a new topic, remain calm and do what they like doing the most. Eating well and sleeping on time is very important too”, he said sharing his views on last minute exam preparation.

GATE 2017 will be further held on February 5, 11 and 12 (Saturdays and Sundays only) by IIT Roorkee, the organizing institute of the exam.

The barcode present in the GATE admit card 2026 carries the candidate's information. It is required for a faster verification process and fraud prevention. So, make sure it does not get tampered. Carry multiple copies in case your GATE 2026 hall ticket is torn or tampered.

Candidates who are appearing for the GATE exam must carry a valid ID proof along with a passport-size photograph, transperant water bottle, and pen (blue or black) along with GATE 2026 hall ticket. We advise to carry atleast two to three copies of admit card to the centre.
