GATE Robotics and Automation Exam Syllabus: The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras has officially announced a major GATE update with the launch of Robotics and Automation (RA) as a separate paper for GATE exam 2027. The paper includes topics driven by the rapid advancement of smart manufacturing, autonomous systems and Industry 4.0. Overall, the GATE Robotics and Automation syllabus 2027 combines Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Control and Computer Science Engineering disciplines.

For a wrong answer chosen in an MCQ, there will be negative marking. For a 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer. For a 2-mark MCQ, 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer. There is no negative marking for wrong answer(s) to MSQ or NAT questions. There is no partial marking in MSQ. |
Commonly asked questions
No, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering examination takes place once a year. Every year, different IITs and IISc conduct exam on rotational basis. GATE is conducted online for three hours for 30 branch papers.
Candidates can choose at least three exam centres while filling their GATE 2026 application form. The list of GATE exam cities (zone-wise) is available on the website. Besides that, it has to be noted that the three centres must be from the same zone. Thus, based on the availability, the centre will be allotted to the candidate for appearing the GATE 2026 exam.
GATE 2027 application form will be released on August 14, 2026. The last date to apply with no late fee is September 21, and with late fee is September 30.

GATE Robotics and Automation Question Paper Format
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering for Robotics and Automation core section consist of 85 marks total. The section is divided into following:

Part “A” is common, which carries 60 marks. It is compulsory for all candidates appearing for GATE robotics and automation (RA) paper.

Part “B” is optional. It carries 25 marks in total. Candidates can either select Part B1 (Electrical Stream) or Part B2 (Mechanical Stream) during the GATE 2027 exam.

Commonly asked questions
Yes, GATE rank is valid for three years. However, some PSUs might not accept previous year's GATE scorecard. Therefore, it is better to go through guidelines and official notification before applying. If a candidate has more than two GATE scorecard, then they must use the one with best score and rank.
GATE 2026 scorecard will be made available for free download from March 27 to May 31. Later from June 1 to December 31, the scorecard can be downloaded by paying a fee of INR 500. The GATE scorecard 2026 will remain valid till 2029.
GATE qualification is relatively low compared to other postgraduate engineering entrance exams. On average, acceptance rate falls between 15 - 20%.
Last year, as per statistical report, out of 936019 registered candidates, 747319 candidates appeared, and 8761 students qualified.
Overall, general cutoff usually remains around 25 -30 marks out of 100 marks. However, for PSUs 75 to 85 marks are considered as a safe qualifying rate.
