NTA JEE Mains 2027 session 1 registrations are underway, and one of the most crucial sections of the form is the selection of the exam city. In this article, we have provided detailed tips on how to fill JEE Main exam city choices in the application form to avoid far-off centre allotment. This will ensure that candidates get their nearest exam centre and can have a smooth exam day experience.

How to Select JEE Mains Exam Centre Choices

How to Select JEE Main 2027 Exam Centre During Registration

The National Testing Agency (NTA) follows an automated process to assign test cities. However, many aspirants miss out on their preferred exam location simply because they do not understand how city dropdowns are populated or how the allotment works. Getting a JEE Mains 2027 exam centre close to where you stay gives you control over your exam day routine, helps you stay calm, and eliminates unnecessary exam day anxiety.

How NTA Restricts JEE Mains Exam City Selection During Registration

The most critical factor in choosing your JEE Main exam city is the address-linked feature. NTA does not permit candidates to select random exam cities across the country. You cannot live in Uttar Pradesh and pick a centre in Bengaluru or Mumbai unless your official address details justify it. The portal generates the list of available examination cities dynamically based on two mandatory fields in your JEE Main 2027 application form, which are:

  • State of Present Address
  • State of Permanent Address

❓How does your address restrict exam city choice selection during JEE Main registration 2027?

When you reach the city selection page, the system checks the states you entered for both addresses. It only shows test cities located within those specific state borders:

  • Same Present and Permanent State: If your permanent home is in Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) and your present address is also in Uttar Pradesh, the portal will only display test cities within Uttar Pradesh (e.g., Lucknow, Kanpur, Noida, Varanasi). You will not see cities from neighbouring states like Delhi, Haryana, or Bihar.
  • Different Present and Permanent States: If your permanent family residence is in Patna (Bihar), but you currently live in a hostel in Kota (Rajasthan), the dropdown will populate available exam cities from both Bihar and Rajasthan.

How Should Students Studying in Different Cities Fill Address in JEE Mains 2027 Form?

Thousands of JEE aspirants live away from home in major coaching hubs like Kota, Sikar, Hyderabad, or Delhi-NCR. A frequent mistake is filling out the hometown address in both the "Permanent Address" and "Present Address" sections out of habit.

If you do that, the system locks you out of the city where you are currently studying. If you plan to appear for the test from your coaching location, your local hostel or rental accommodation must be listed as your Present Address. Make sure you have supporting documentation (such as an institutional ID, hostel fee receipt, or local agreement) to match your application details.

Want the Closest JEE Main Exam Centre? Tips to Choose Your Exam Cities

Here are some tips you can follow to try and get your preferred exam city in JEE Main exam:

1. Submit Your Application During the First Week

There is no guarantee that early submission leads to allotment of your first city choice. However, it is advised that candidates should complete the registration process within the first few days of registration to avoid any last-minute hassle.

2. Treat Choices 2, 3, and 4 Seriously

Do not enter backup cities at random. If you live in a smaller district with limited CBT labs, getting your second preference is a real possibility.

  • Pick secondary cities that have good connections from your home.
  • Avoid cities that require overnight stays or complicated transport.
  • Ensure the backup city has good hotel facilities in case you need to arrive the evening before.

3. Check the Impact of Paper Medium

JEE Main is conducted in English, Hindi, and 11 regional languages. While English and Hindi test interfaces are supported nationwide, regional language interfaces (such as Gujarati, Tamil, Marathi, or Assamese) are restricted to designated centres within specific states. Opting for a regional language will automatically limit your eligible test centre pool.

JEE Mains 2027 City Selection Strategy: Do’s and Don’ts

Check what all points should be avoided while filling the exam city pereference in the JEE Mains 2027 application form:

Category Do Don't
Registration Timing Apply within the first 7 to 10 days of portal launch. Wait until the final 24 hours when servers slow down.
Address Filling Put the state you will be available in on exam day as your Present Address. Enter your permanent home address twice if you are currently living in another state for studies.
City Preference Ranking Place the geographically closest test city as Choice 1. Do not select a distant city just because your friends or classmates picked it.
Backup Options Choose secondary cities with direct road or rail transit. Choose backup cities across difficult places or poorly connected routes.
PIN Code Accuracy Verify your postal PIN code and district match your ID documents. Enter wrong PIN codes that might misdirect your regional centre mapping.
Form Verification Double-check your city choices before completing payment and download the confirmation page. Expect the JEE Main application correction window to allow city edits later. It might not be allowed.

A:

How NTA Allots JEE Mains Exam Centres?

The allocation system runs on an automated algorithm without manual intervention. Knowing how the system processes your form helps you rank your options sensibly:

  • Capacity Limits: Each Computer-Based Test (CBT) lab in an exam city has a fixed number of computer systems. Once those seats are assigned, the city is closed for further allocations.
  • Priority Check: The system looks at your Choice 1 first. If seats are available in that city for your chosen paper and language medium, you are locked into that city.
  • Automated Process: If the first city is full, the system immediately moves down to Choice 2, then Choice 3, and finally Choice 4.
  • NTA's Administrative Rights: If an entire city faces unexpected technical issues, severe weather disruptions, or sudden infrastructure limits, NTA reserves the right to allocate a centre in another nearby city.
  • Finality of Allotment: Once your city intimation slip and admit card are issued, NTA does not accept manual requests or emails to change your centre.

Q:   Are virtual calculators allowed in JEE Main?
A:

No. NTA has not allowed calculators of kind - virtual or physical inside the JEE Main exam hall. Candidates must not carry calculators or any other electronic device in the JEE Main examination centre.

JEE Mains 2027 Advance City Intimation Slip vs. Admit Card

A common source of confusion among candidates is the difference between the initial city intimation and the final admit card:

Once your admit card arrives, check out the test venue immediately. Many CBT centres are situated in industrial parks or college campuses on the city outskirts. If possible, visit the centre a day before the exam to check parking, travel time, and entry gates so you face no surprises on the day of your JEE Mains paper.
