A student of Sanskriti school, Delhi, Rajas Bansal topped JEE Main 2016 exam by securing an AIR 3. The All India Ranks for JEE Main 2016 were released on the last evening of June 23. However, CBSE announced the JEE Main 2016 scores on April 27.
According to Rajas, it was only because of his parents, teachers at coaching and friends that he was able to achieve what he has. Crediting his success to his mentors, he says, “ My parents helped me a lot by always motivating me. There were always by my side. My teacher at the coaching center were equally helpful. They guided me and showed me the right direction. While my friends too helped through the times when I had my own doubts about my preparations”.

Q. Congratulations on your achievement. How are you feeling being the JEE Main 2016 topper with an AIR 3?
Rajas Bansal: It feels great. I feel really nice. I am pretty excited.
Q. Did you expect it?
Rajas Bansal: No. Not at all. I never expected this, I thought I would be somewhere in the Top 50 list but never thought that I would acquire an AIR 3 in JEE Main.
Q. How long have you been preparing for?
Rajas Bansal: Well, I started in Class 10th but I was not really serious then. I started with my preparations seriously in Std 11th.
Q. What was your preparation strategy for the exam?
Rajas Bansal: I did not really have a strategy in mind. However, I took coaching classes. I used to study 6-8 hours. However, during peak time i.e. when there were tests at coaching and exams in school, I used to study for around 10 hours a day.
Besides this, I used to try and study every subject every day in order to not lose interest in any of the subjects. I used to take short breaks between subjects. I did not study in long stretches.
I felt out very stressed towards the end but our teachers at coaching were really helpful and motivating. My parents also supported me during that time.
Q. Can you share your class 12th Board marks , your score in JEE Main and your rank and score in JEE Advanced?
- Class 12th Board Marks – 98.8%
- JEE Main 2016 marks – 304/360
- JEE Advanced 2016 Rank – 124
- JEE Advanced 2016 score – 241/372
Q. You were ranked 124 in JEE Advanced and 3rd in JEE Main. How did your parents react to it?
Rajas Bansal: My parents were really happy and excited. Actually they were expecting a good rank in JEE Main but not in JEE Advanced though.
Q. Which institute are you vying for and which is the course you aim to pursue?
Rajas Bansal: I am planning to pursue Computer Science from IIT Delhi.
Q. What are your expectations from IIT Delhi?
Rajas Bansal: I think the faculty out there in IIT Delhi is pretty good. I am excited about the exposure that I would get there considering the kind of bright and smart students are present all around the campus there.
Also, I have heard that there really good facilities for co-curricular activities at the campus. I see it as a platform for learning new things and an overall personality development.
Q. Have you take any other exam/s besides JEE Main and Advanced?
Rajas Bansal: I took BITSAT and scored 430 out of 450. I have also cleared KVPY and was ranked 99.
Q. Any tips for aspirants taking the exam next year?
Rajas Bansal: I would just like to say that they should manage their time well and utilize their time completely in Std 11. Also, they should not take stress.
Q. So, tell us something about your family?
Rajas Bansal: My father is in IRS(Indian Revenue Service), my mother is a homemaker and I have a younger brother who is Std 8th.
Q. What are your plans for the future?
Rajas Bansal: I haven’t really thought this much. However, I am inclined towards research right now but I don’t know what my mindset would be after 4 years.
Q. Tell us about yourself and your hobbies?
Rajas Bansal: I like playing football and computer games. I like watching TV series like Game of Thrones, TVF Pitchers etc . I also watch a lot of movies and cricket.

Guru Nanak Institute of Technology accepts JEE Main scores for admission in BTech programme. However, it is not compulsory. Aspirants with WBJEE or CE-AMPAI scores can also get admission in BTech provided they also meet the eligibility criteria.

Students who gave the JEE Main session 2 exam and want to take admission at IITs should start preparing for the JEE Advanced exam. Students with a more than 98th percentile should start to study for the JEE Advanced exam.
Those who have secured a percentile between 95th and 98th should focus more on

With a JEE Main percentile of 90.94 and CRL rank ~1.4 Lacs (female, general category), you have realistic chances in mid-tier NITs (later rounds), state government colleges, and strong private universities in Tamil Nadu and Bangalore for ECE/EEE. Top NITs/IIITs are unlikely, but good regional option

With a JEE Main 2026 rank of 400,510 (≈ 70 percentile), admission to NITs, IIITs, or top GFTIs through JoSAA counseling is not possible.
Why?

With a JEE Main CRL rank of ~79,364 and an EWS category rank of ~11,884, you have a realistic chance of securing CSE in several mid-tier NITs, newer IIITs, and some GFTIs. Top NITs (Trichy, Surathkal, Warangal, Allahabad) are out of reach, but options like NIT Jalandhar, NIT Hamirpur, IIIT Kota, III
