The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) has come a long way since its inception on February 26, 1983. Initially, it was specially designed primarily as a qualifying exam for postgraduate engineering programs. Still, GATE has evolved into a comprehensive test that opens doors to higher education, public sector jobs, and global opportunities. Over the years, changes in the exam's format, scope, and significance reflect the shifting landscape of technical education and career prospects in India. This blog explores how GATE has evolved, comparing its early days to its present form.

GATE 2025 Exam

GATE in the Early Years

When GATE was introduced, it was primarily aimed at evaluating the core knowledge of undergraduate engineering students. The focus was on fundamental concepts, and the syllabus was relatively straightforward.

1. Limited Awareness

In earlier years, GATE was not widely recognised as other entrance exams. Many engineering students were still unaware of its significance, as the career opportunities were restricted to specific academics and few government positions.

Q:   Is IISc Bangalore tougher than IIT?
A:

Yes, for admission to some of the programmes IISc Bangalore is way tougher than IITs. Also, the quality of education, research & development quality at IISc Bangalore has very high standards. IISc Bangalore has produced some of the most eminent personalities and has a very high registered patent record.

For getting admission to any of the courses offered at IISc Bangalore, candidates are required to take the entrance exams specified by the university and candidates having valid scores/ percentile will be selected for further admission process.

Q:   How does the eligibility criteria for the M.Tech programme at IIT Mandi compare with that of IIT Roorkee?
A:
The eligibility criteria for M.Tech programmes at IIT Mandi and IIT Roorkee are similar in many aspects. Both require candidates to have a B.Tech or B.E degree in a relevant field, with a minimum qualifying percentage of 60% or 6.5 CGPA (out of 10) or equivalent for general and OBC candidates, and 55% or 6.0 CGPA (out of 10) or equivalent for SC/ST and PwD candidates. However, there may be slight differences in specific eligibility criteria for different M.Tech programmes offered by each institution. It is recommended to check the official websites of both IIT Mandi and IIT Roorkee to get the detailed eligibility criteria for specific M.Tech programmes.
Q:   Which one is better: NIT Sikkim or NIT Agartala?
A:

The 2024 placement data for NIT Agartala has not not been released. The table given below compares the NIT Sikkim placement details 2023 with NIT Agartala:

NIT NameMedian Package (2023)Placement Rate (2023)
NIT Sikkim

2. Paper-Based Format

GATE was conducted offline, using pen and paper. This format often led to logistic challenges, including evaluation and result declaration delays.

3. Restricted Opportunities

GATE scores were primarily used for admission to MTech programmes at IITs, NITs, and other reputed institutions. Hence, there was little to no scope for employment opportunities based on the GATE scores
