The AILET (All India Law Entrance Test) is considered to be one of the toughest law exams to crack in India. It is similar to the CLAT (Common Law Admission Test). With only a few days left, now is the perfect time to conclude the preparation and start revision. AILET 2026 is scheduled on December 14, 2025. As there are some changes in the AILET exam pattern, candidates should go through the exam pattern before the exam. The exam will be conducted in a pen-and-paper mode in more than 25 test cities across India. Read this article to know the AILET 2026 Syllabus and how to prepare for each section of AILET to score well in the exam.

AILET, however, provides some key differences in the study techniques that may be adopted for CLAT. For one, the number of colleges, and consequently the seats on offer, is minuscule. There is only a single NLU - the one in New Delhi - that enrolls students via the AILET 2026. The weightage of the sections in both the exams is also different. AILET also differs in the sense that it is the first major Law Entrance Exam in any season. One area where the two exams have now converged is in the application of negative marks. While earlier AILET did not have negative scoring, now in this regard, it is on the same page as CLAT.

AILET BA LLB Exam Pattern 2026
AILET question paper for BA LLB will have 150 questions. Refer to the table given below to check the detailed breakdown of marks in each section:
| Subject |
Questions per section |
Marks |
|---|---|---|
| English Language |

| Current Affairs & General Knowledge |
30 questions |
30 |
| Logical Reasoning |
70 questions |
70 |
| Total | 150 | 150 |
Now, let us tackle each of the three areas within AILET individually:
AILET 2026 General Knowledge (GK)
The General Knowledge section has a weightage of 30 marks. The trend in the division of questions between Static GK and Current Affairs (CA) mirrors the same in the other law entrance tests. The focus is higher on CA, yet one can’t totally leave out the static part. So, students must go through History, Geography, Economy, and General Science from any national-level publication such as Arihant, Pearson, or Universal. Polity and Miscellaneous will need a greater degree of study due to their relevance in Legal and Current Affairs, respectively. Although the time duration of twelve months prior to the exam is considered, most of the questions are asked from October to March. One needs to thoroughly go through newspapers such as The Hindu, especially its Editorial and National pages. Plus, online portals such as GK Today, TCY, and Cloud Affairs are of much help.
The Logical reasoning section carries the maximum weightage; i.e. 50 per cent in the AILET 2025 Exam. Reasoning is actually a combination of both verbal logic, as well as analytical reasoning. So, one part is full of numbers and data, while the other is made of words and puzzles. Reasoning needs ample practice. Books by MK Pandey and RS Aggarwal will suffice. For Data Interpretation (DI) questions, the trick lies in forming the table. Once this is done, the rest of the questions flow automatically. Hence, the students are advised to prepare this subject carefully and give special attention.
General - 93.25 marks
SC/ST - 59.75/58.5 marks
PwD - 64 marks
Kashmir Migrant - 35.25 marks
Residents of J&K- 54.25 marks.
AILET 2026 English Language (EL)
For many students, this becomes the easiest segment to approach. Unlike, say, GK, which requires continuous study, or Legal, which is a new concept, English is something students are constantly in touch with. While a good reading habit helps, regular practice is needed to hone the skills. For grammar, editions of Wren & Martin and Geraldine Woods are considered the best. Reading Comprehensions (RCs) often act as time killers. So, these need to be treated with much caution. Regular practice across the topics will ensure that the least amount of time is needed. The most popular topics for RCs are from philosophy, history, wildlife, art, literature, business, and economics. A thorough reading of the passage is needed, as questions are mostly inference-based.
AILET 2026 Logical Reasoning (LR)
Reasoning is actually a combination of both verbal logic as well as analytical reasoning.
Beyond these individual areas, one needs a holistic strategy to crack the exam at large. GK is one area, for instance, that requires regular study. Reading newspapers has got to now form part of the daily routine. This reading must not be merely passive, but the appearing candidate has to prepare his/ her own notes to go with. Adequate time also has to go towards understanding the complex legal topics. The other three areas will need to be given their own time as well. Of course, each student will have to tailor their own study time depending on the weaknesses and strengths of the individual.
There is also an art involved in the test-taking. As the AILET remains a pen- and- paper test, adequate time has to be devoted to practising such mock tests. There is also a lot of dexterity involved in filling up the OMR sheets. The more the practice the better. Inexperienced hands often align the OMR sheet wrongly with the unintentional option number. Students also need to prepare for scenarios on which section to start with, which to end, and the general order. There is no one magic formula in this, as it differs from one student to another.

GK obviously requires the least amount of time due to the fact that students either know or do not. There is no middle ground here. Whatever extra time a student gets, needs to be given to legal, as this is the make- or- break section. RCs in English and the Table-based DI questions are usually lengthier. So, students must divide their time adroitly, to make sure they aren’t spending too much time on one topic alone. The time of the test also matters. The AILET exam typically takes place between 10:00 am and 11:30 am. Students must prepare during this time period, especially.
AILET Mock papers should also be attempted during this time slot. This is to acquaint oneself with the clock. Some students have a habit of taking an afternoon nap. So, this timing could affect them psychologically, which needs rectification. AILET aspirants must seek continual progress rather than a single straight shot solution. One may start with topic tests, rather than full-length ones. Finally, students must not fret too much about the limited number of seats. If one is good enough, one will make it irrespective of the seats or AILET 2026 exam cut-offs.

Any stream can apply for the AILET exam, but many students choose Arts or Humanities because subjects like English and Current Affairs help in the AILET syllabus. Many students feel the AILET exam is bit tougher than CLAT because it has fewer seats and high competition. The AILET syllabus focus more on reasoning and legal aptitude. Both tests need good preparation, but AILET 2026 usually has higher cutoff for AILET colleges under NLU Delhi.
