IIT Madras BS Program Convocation; Alumni Join IISc, IITs, ISB, and Top Global Universities

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras held the Convocation and Certificate Distribution Ceremony for its BS Degree Program on campus. Over 38,000 students from across India and abroad are enrolled in the program, with 52% pursuing it alongside another undergraduate degree.
The IIT Madras Convocation and Certificate Distribution Ceremony was held in the presence of Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras; Chief Guest Mr. Aravind Krishnan, Managing Director and Head of South East Asia Private Equity at Blackstone; along with faculty members, students, and their parents.
Highlights of the IIT Madras BS Degree in Data Science and Applications:
- Diverse Age Group: Learners range from 18 to 80+ years, with 8% aged 30 and above, proving it’s never too late to upskill.
- Interdisciplinary Reach: While 72% come from engineering/tech backgrounds, 22% are from arts, science, or commerce.
- Dual Degrees: 52% of students are pursuing this degree alongside another undergraduate program.
- Academic Excellence: Topper Dr. Sadineni Nikhil Chowdary (CGPA 9.82) also secured Rank 1 in GATE Data Science.
- Financial Support: 10,037 students from low-income families (₹1 LPA) receive 75% scholarships; 4,825 study completely free through CSR support.
- Global Admissions: Graduates have secured admissions to leading institutions like IISc, IITB, IITD, ISB, University of Michigan, and Texas A&M.
Congratulating all the graduating students of the BS Degree Program, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said, “This is the first batch graduating with the 4-year BS Degree. This year, 867 students are graduating with either a 3-year BSc Degree or a 4-year BS Degree. Out of these 867 students, close to 150 have a family income of less than Rs. 1 lakh per annum and another 100 students, less than Rs. 5 lakh per annum. (Further, 365 students are graduating with a diploma).”
Prof. V. Kamakoti added, “I am also very happy to inform all of you that in the GATE Data Science and AI Paper, three of the top 10 ranks were secured by BS Data Science Students. I am also excited to inform you that the topper is an MBBS Doctor from AIIMS Delhi, who is planning to pursue MTech in Data Science and AI at IIT Madras.”
IIT Madras BS Degree in Data Science and Applications
IIT Madras offers four-year BS programs in Data Science and Applications and in Electronic Systems, designed to deliver industry-relevant education to learners of all ages, backgrounds, and locations. Developed with input from industry leaders, the programs combine online content with in-person exams to ensure flexibility and academic rigour. With strong fundamentals, hands-on training, and project-based learning, graduates are equipped with skills that meet industry demands and ensure high employability.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Andrew Thangaraj, Coordinator, BS Program, IIT Madras, said, “This graduating batch is a testament to what is possible when high-quality education meets accessibility and determination. Our BS Program has empowered learners from remote villages, top metros, and even international cities to reimagine what’s possible for their futures at their own pace. We’re proud to be shaping a generation of data-literate problem solvers for India and the world.”
