Banaras Hindu University's scientists awarded patent for Ayurvedic Formula Against SARS-CoV-2 Virus. The Ayurvedic formulation inhibits SARS-Cov-2 growth by over 95% and is expected to be used during future COVID-19 treatments.

Banaras Hindu University's scientists have been awarded a patent for formulating an Ayurvedic formulation to treat SARS-COV-2. Reportedly. the formulation is expected to inhibit the SARS-COV-2 growth by 95% and play an important element for future COVID-19 treatments. The researchers from the Centre for Genetic Disorders at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) have been awarded the Indian patent (Patent no: 550169) that combines phytomolecules of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and Morus alba to treat the problem. The formula has shown successful results and inhibits over 95% of cell lines, making it as a suitable option for future COVID-19 treatments.

However, as per the testing guidelines, testing in animal models would be followed by clinical trials to assess its impact on humans. The team led by Prof. Parimal Das, Dr. Garima Jain (Malaviya Post Doctoral Fellow), Dr. Chandana Basu Malick (Wellcome Trust Fellow), and Dr. Bhagyalaxmi Mohapatra (Department of Zoology) also includes PhD scholars Prashant Ranjan, Neha, Chandra Devi, and Prashasti Yadav.  

The leader of the team, Parimal Das highlighted his delight sharing, “This achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of our team. We are optimistic about the formulation’s potential as a natural solution to combat SARS-CoV-2.” The team has also filed two international and two additional Indian patents, with two German patents already granted for similar work. This latest Indian patent underscores their relentless efforts, which began during the early pandemic days, providing a potential pathway for inhibiting SARS-CoV-2 growth.
