IIT JAM 2026 Counselling will be done for the candidates who have qualified for the JAM 2026 cut-off and are willing to take admissions to the courses offered by IITs and other participating institutes.
The JAM online counselling registration process is expected to start on April, 2026 onwards. JAM 2026 qualified candidates need to log in to the JOAPS portal and register for the counselling process by paying a non-refundable fee of INR 750. The last date for filling out the IIT JAM 2026 counselling form is expected to be  April 11, 2026. IIT JAM 2026 results are expected to be released on March 20, 2026.

Only candidates in the JAM 2026 Merit List based on JAM scorecard will be eligible to apply for admission. Irrespective of whether a candidate appears in the Merit List of one or two Test Papers, only one duly completed Application Form should be submitted. Candidates who secure marks greater than or equal to the JAM cut-off marks of their respective category are eligible to apply for JAM 2026 admissions. Candidates should regularly check for offers of seats and exercise their decision through the Application Portal. Candidates who will be offered a seat should pay a Seat Booking fee online within the stipulated time. IIT JAM 2026 Counselling dates are yet to be released. So, we have evaluated the process and dates according to the previous year.

What is IIT JAM 2026 Counselling Process

An Applicant was considered for admission only to the programme choices filled in the Admission Form. There were four rounds of admission, in the normal case. If seats remain vacant, additional rounds may be conducted. Applicants receiving an offer in any of the rounds are required to login at the official website within the stipulated time and choose one of the three options viz. (a) Accept and Freeze (b) Accept with Upgrade (c) Reject and Quit

The candidates will be required to login to the portal to view their status. Applicants who will be offered seat in the First Round must login to Candidate Portal and choose one of the three options discussed above in the stipulated time. If seats remain vacant after the first round of admission, a Second Admission List will be prepared. The candidates who chose Accept and Upgrade in the previous round are required to login to the portal to view their current seat allocation. Applicants who will be offered seat in the Second List must login to Candidate Portal and choose one of the three options discussed above on or before the stipulated time.

Below is the eligibility criteria required by the candidates for filling out the IIT JAM 2026 Counselling application form:

Eligibility Requirements (ERs): Candidates who obtained marks above the cutoff marks (for the respective category) are eligible to apply for admissions to IITs, provided they satisfy the following:
• Candidates should have passed an undergraduate degree or should be currently studying in their final year of undergraduate programme. Proof of having passed the undergraduate degree must be submitted within the timeline provided by the respective admitting Institute.
• Candidates promoted without a marksheet should produce a certificate stating the subjects studied in that semester/year duly signed by the Head of the Institute.
• Foreign nationals with Indian degree are eligible to apply, subject to policy of the Admitting Institute

Q:   What is the minimum eligibility requirement for the IIT JAM Counselling process?
A: 

Minimum Educational Qualifications (MEQs): Each programme has its own set of Minimum Educational Qualifications, which specify the essential subjects to be studied during Bachelor's Degree. The MEQs and seat matrix for various programmes at the Admitting Institutes are listed in a consolidated table.

Verification of Minimum Educational Qualifications (MEQs) and the Eligibility Requirements (ERs) for admission is the prerogative of the Admitting Institute only and the Organizing Institute will not respond to any queries in this regard.

IIT JAM 2026 Centralised Admission Process

The admission process of IIT JAM for all the IITs will be as under:

Candidates first needed to fill and submit the application form for IIT JAM 2026 admissions on the official website.
The application form for CAP had to be filled in online mode only and, candidates have to upload the required documents as well. Moreover, the candidates need to pay the expected application fee of INR 750 using the online methods. Candidates could select as many courses as they want through the common application form. 

Publishing of IIT JAM Admission List 

Next, after the exam authority receives all the applications, it published the admission lists on the basis of choices made by the candidates and the rank list.
After this, the candidates who are allotted the seats can secure their admission as under: 

Accept and Freeze: Candidates can use this option to book their seats.
They need to pay a "Seat Booking Fee" of INR 10,000 if belonging to the General/OBC-NCL/EWS category and INR 5,000 if belonging to SC/ST/PwD category. The admission fee can be paid in online mode using credit card/debit card/net banking. The admission fee will be transferred to the bank account of the allotted college. 

Accept with Upgrade: If candidates are okay with the seat allotted but they want to participate in the next round of counselling to see a better option then they select this option. In this option, candidates will have to pay the fee same as above to secure the seat. The candidates will be given a high preference for college in the next round. 

Reject and Quit: If candidates do not want the allotted seat, then they can choose this option. The candidates will receive an OTP on their mobile number on selecting this option. Candidates need to enter the same and confirm the decision.

Q:   What are the steps involved in IIT JAM 2026 choice filling?

Here are the steps that a candidate needs to follow while making their choice of institutes during the IIT JAM 2026 counselling process:

  1. Select the institute from the drop down menu.
  2. Select the programme from the drop down menu.
  3. Click on "Add Preference" to add the selected programme, one at a time. The list of selected programmes can be seen below the opening and closing rank table.
  4. Use the upward arrow to move a programme up in the list of choices. Note that the programme with 1 as preference is the most preferred programme and 2 is the second most preferred programme and so on. Use the downward arrow to move a programme down in the list of choices. You can apply for any number of eligible programmes.
  5. Click on the "Remove" button to remove a programme from the list of choice. If you happen to accidental remove a programme from the list, you can add the programme again by selecting it through the drop down menu (s).
  6. Hover over any chosen programme and use your mouse to drag and change its position in the list of choices.
Q:   When will the IIT JAM 2025 first admission list release?
A: 

The JAM 2025 first admission list was announced by IIT Delhi on May 26, 2025, on the official website. Candidates who have earlier applied for the IIT JAM 2025 Counselling registration portal will be able to check whether their AIR rank lies under the IIT JAM first admission list 2025.

Following the release of the first admission list, candidates who are offered a seat will need to complete the online payment of the seat booking fee by May 30, 2025, to confirm their admission.
