Understanding JEE Exam
JEE is one of the most difficult exams in the word. It consists of two separate tests- JEE Main and JEE Advanced. NITs, IIITs and other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) admit students in their BTech, BArch and BPlan through JEE Main. NTA conducts JEE Main twice a year in January and April. Candidates can appear in one or both the exams and the best score of two sessions will be considered for calculating the rank.
For BTech admission at IITs, candidates have to appear in JEE Advanced. Only those students who score above the cutoff marks in Mains can appear in Advanced. JEE Advanced is conducted only once a year in May/June by any of the seven old IITs.
Who Sets the JEE Question Paper?
All the decisions related to JEE exam is taken by an apex board called JAB. It consists of representatives from NTA, IITs, NITs, IIITs and other reputed institutions. The government reconstitutes JAB every two year to ensure transparency and fairness in decisions. JAB selects the panel/teachers who prepare JEE Main question paper.
How Are Questions Prepared?
The question paper of JEE Main and Advanced are set by a panel of subject experts/faculties from various IITs, NITs, IITs and various other institutes selected by the JEE Apex Board.
They ensure that the questions cover the entire syllabus and assess various levels of conceptual understanding and application. Questions are selected in a way to include a range of difficulty levels, from easy to challenging, to differentiate between students’ understanding and problem-solving abilities.
The questions are first prepared as draft papers and sent to different subject experts as well as sample group of students who attempts them. The Feedback is collected on draft question papers for question clarity, difficulty level, and the time required to complete the paper.
The final question paper is prepared upon ensuring that it meets the guidelines set by the JAB and is free from errors.

Students who are preparing for JEE Main exam are advised to first cover the entire JEE Main syllabus. Covering only the high weightage chapters would decrease their chances of getting full/high score in JEE Main exam. Only after covering the entire syllabus, students can check most important chapters for JEE Mains.
