The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is an important exam for law aspirants. By scoring good marks in CLAT, one could get admission to the top law institutes of the country. This article discusses some of the important topics and reference books for preparing and scoring well in the CLAT exam. Let’s begin with the pattern of the exam. Every student needs to know the pattern of the exam before preparation. The exam structure of CLAT Exam 2025 consists of 120 questions of one mark each. Among all sections, the Constitutional Law has more weightage in the exam every year.

The subject-wise important topics are given below:

Constitutional Law 

In this section, questions will be asked based on LLB subjects. From Constitutional Law, important topics are as follows:

  • Constitution of India
  • Judicial and Quasi-Judicial bodies which include Supreme Court, High Court, District Court and Tribunals
  • Elections of President, Vice President and Legislative Assembly
  • Rights and Duties
  • Official Languages and Panchayati Raj Acts, etc.

Law of Contracts 

From the Law of Contracts section, some of the important topics are: Nature of Contracts

  • Quasi Contracts
  • Contracts Formation
  • Void and Illegal Contracts
  • Contracts Discharge
  • Agency Contracts and Insurance – Guarantee, etc.

Law of Torts 

Understand and learn the law of torts clearly as some of the high-weightage questions in the exam come from this section. Some of the important topics are:

  • Definitions
  • Types of Liability especially Strict and Absolute Liability
  • Tort Feasors, Conspiracy, False Imprisonment, Malicious Prosecution and Remedies & Negligence, etc.

Criminal Law 

The students must understand and learn the general principles of criminal law. The important topics of this section are:

  • General Principles
  • Conspiracy, Offenses, Liability, Punishments and Criminal Conceptions, etc.

International Law 

To score high in this section, students must be aware of the International Law of World Bank, WTO, UN, IMF, etc. The important topics of this section are given below:

  • Settlements of Disputes
  • International Treaties
  • Law of the Sea
  • UN Charter
  • State Recognition
  • Environmental Laws
  • Territorial Disputes and Terrorism, etc.

General Tips 

  • Apart from the topics given above, also go through Patents and its Acts (1970), WTO IPR Rules, etc.
  • Read newspapers and magazines regularly as this would not only improve reading skills but would also enhance knowledge
  • Keep up-to-date with the current happenings and its causes around the world
  • Try to give maximum mocks as possible and improve scores in every mock test

Based on recent CLAT analyses, the English Language and General Knowledge & Current Affairs sections were rated as the easiest. English is more about reading comprehension with direct questions. GK is highly scoring for those with consistent, up-to-date daily news preparation.

Many students feel the AILET exam is a bit tougher than CLAT because it has fewer seats and high competition. The AILET syllabus focuses more on reasoning and legal aptitude. Both tests need good preparation, but AILET 2027 usually has a higher cutoff for AILET colleges under NLU Delhi.

No, the CLAT Admit Card 2027 is not out yet. The admit card will likely be released on November 15, 2026. The official schedule has not been announced yet.
