It is utterly crucial to optimise your CLAT preparation in accordance with the examination, giving appropriate time and attention to prepare each and every section. In this article, aspirants can learn about the section-wise books for CLAT 2026 as available by the recommended authors.

The Consortium of NLUs is expected to conduct CLAT 2026 on December 7, 2025. Candidates who wish to appear for CLAT 2026 must fill the CLAT application forms on or before the deadline. The candidates should know that they cannot 'over-focus' on a particular topic or attention by sacrificing the time needed to optimally prepare for another topic or section. Furthermore, students need to be aware of the fact that it is neither possible to study all the books and material available in the market, nor prudent to do so. Rather, the focus of the candidate must be on focusing on limited (but highly relevant) material and revision of the same.
The Consortium has not released the CLAT 2026 Exam Pattern yet. However, as per the revised CLAT Exam pattern 2025, the CLAT question paper will consist of a total of 120 questions of one mark each based on the five subjects/sections as under:
- English Langauge including Comprehension,
- Current Affairs including General Knowledge,
- Quantitative Techniques (Elementary level),
- Legal Reasoning and,
- Logical Reasoning
Candidates can start CLAT Preparation Strategy 2026 with the recommended books for each section as under:
- Best CLAT Books for English and Reading Comprehension
- Best CLAT Books for General Knowledge and Current Affairs
- Best CLAT Books for Quantitative Aptitude
- Best CLAT Books for Legal Reasoning
- Best CLAT Books for Logical Reasoning
Best CLAT Books for English and Reading Comprehension
As far as improving one’s vocabulary is concerned, Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis is considered the gold standard and is a time-tested classic, and is globally accepted as the go-to book to improve your vocabulary. However, it has to be remembered that it may not be possible to finish the whole book during your preparation, especially if it results in disturbing the proportion of time to be devoted to other sections. To avoid the same, what students can do is skip the theory parts of the chapters, and do the exercises given at the end of every chapter, with enough number of revisions.
In regards to rest of the English portion of the section, including grammar and Reading Comprehension, although there is no single trick or book, that can suddenly teach you all the tricks and make you an expert in grammar and reading, and the same depends a lot on your previous reading habits (both curricular and extra-curricular), but the CLAT Guide by Tata McGraw-Hill is a reliable source of study (albeit with a few mistakes here and there), particularly when there is limited time left to prepare for the examination.

The CLAT Topper List will be released along with the CLAT 2027 Result. It must be noted that the admission to the NLU will be given based on the preference choosen by the candidate while filling the application form.
Best CLAT Books for General Knowledge and Current Affairs
This topic is very vast and there is no syllabus as such to study the same, and therefore preparing for this section is a never-ending task. Nevertheless, this should not deter a student from preparing as well as possible for the section.
- For static General Knowledge (or simply General Knowledge), a student should prefer Lucent’s General Knowledge 2024, since this book contains condensed and accurate information on the topics. Another book to improve your knowledge on this section is General Knowledge 2024-25 by Tarun Goyal.
- According to the trend, most questions in past few years in this section have been from Current Affairs, and to improve the same, it is advisable to read newspapers daily, preferably either The Hindu or Indian Express. Moreover, one can also find ample relevant material online, stick to well-known websites and publishers.
- While studying for this section, the order of preference (from most relevant to least relevant) of an ideal candidate should be, Current Affairs, Indian Polity, Modern History, Economics, Geography, Ancient/Medieval History and Science.

Best CLAT Books for Quantitative Aptitude
Although this topic contains the least number of questions, nevertheless, it is important to make the best of this section. Students should not feel intimidated by this section, since topics that this section covers are from Class 10 and below. Quantitative Aptitude by RS Aggarwal should suffice in covering this section, and with enough practice, the Mathematics section can even turn out to be a bonus.

Best CLAT Books for Legal Reasoning
This section remains the most important of all the sections and includes questions pertaining both to legal reasoning and legal GK (which includes Legal Current Affairs, Static Legal Knowledge, and Legal vocabulary). Some recommended books are:
- Universal’s Guide to CLAT LLB Entrance Examination,
- Pearson’s Guide to the CLAT 2026,
- Legal Awareness and Legal Reasoning for CLAT LLB Entrance Examinations.
Legal Maxims and terminology should be thoroughly studied and revised, since the number of such maxims and terms are limited, and questions are bound to be asked from among them.
Legal reasoning can be improved only with the constant practice since options will be very close to each other and, there will only be minute differences between the options, which can only be detected with regular practice.

Best CLAT Books for Logical Reasoning
This is another important topic with heavy weightage and is not to be neglected by any means. Continuous practice is very important in this topic, and some of the books, that will help prepare for this particular section are:
- Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning by RS Aggarwal
- Arihant’s A New Approach to Verbal and Analytical Reasoning.
This is one of the most scoring sections of the paper and the kind of questions where you can be certain about whether you answered the question correctly or not. However, logical reasoning questions also take time, hence, time management in dealing with these questions is important.

It is also worth mentioning that apart from the above-recommended books and sources, if aspirants choose to follow and refer to study material from other private institutions, then it is preferable to follow material from coaching institutions that exclusively cater to prepare students for CLAT and similar law entrance examinations exclusively.
Finally, it is important to remember that preparation for CLAT (or any competitive examination) is incomplete without going through relevant previous years’ CLAT question papers. This will give you a fair idea about what to expect in the examination and will help you streamline your preparation and focusing on relevant material and avoiding irrelevant material. Remember, the exam is a game, you are the player, and you have to collect as many points as possible to win the game!

Yes, most law departments at private and government law colleges in Chennai do not ask for CLAT exam scores for BA LLB after Class 12. Even the top-ranked Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences BA LLB course requires Saveetha Admission Test scores if you haven't sat for the CLAT exam.
