XLRI GD-PI WAT Process

For XLRI personal interview, candidates are usually called to a venue, often a premium hotel in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, or Bangalore. Upon arrival, candidates undergo document verification and biometric registration. Candidates are then divided into panels, typically consisting of 8 to 9 people for the GD. Soon after the GD is conducted, candidates are given 15 minutes for WAT to write on the GD topic.

XLRI Personal Interview is conducted after GD and WAT rounds are conducted. Officials at the XLRI interview venue will observe the candidate's punctuality. Therefore, candidates must try and reach the venue before the designated time. Arriving late can cause unnecessary stress and disrupt the XLRI Interview process.

Q&A Icon
Commonly asked questions
Q:   When should I start preparing for XAT exam?
A:

Ideally, candidates should start preparing for XAT from March onwards so that they have ample time to cover the syllabus and practicea good number of mock tests. However, starting preparation in June-July is also fine. About a minimum of six are required to prepare well for the XAT exam as it is one of the tougher MBA entrance tests. Candidates can also opt for coaching classes for XAT as per their convenience. Candidates must study for about six to eight hours daily to be able to cover the syllabus and have enough time for practicing mock tests. Yes, they will need to strike a balance between exam coverage and mock test practice.

However, the capacity of every student is different so, they must decide upon hours of study according to their own capacity and their control over the main topics of XAT. Making a workable plan is very important for XAT preparation, no matter when they start it.

Q:   How can I prepare for XAT by self study?
A:

If you are planning to prepare for XAT exam by self study, you need to start early. At least six months before. XAT exam is conducted on the first Sunday of January every year. So, if you start preparing for the XAT in June or July, you will have good six months to prepare. Make a preparation plan that includes XAT syllabus coverage, problem solving sessions, mock tests and revision. Get hold of best books for XAT. Consult mentors or previous year toppers for selecting the best books for preparation. Join online study groups where you can get the help of mentors and peers for problem solving and clearing of doubts in topics. Work in tough topics first and then move to easier topics.

Solve a large number and variety of XAT mock tests to master the syllabus. You will need to do a rigorous work on XAT mock tests as for candidates who opt for self study, have to rely on practice.

Q:   Is XAT tough for candidates from non-Engineering background?
A:

Yes, XAT is slightly tougher for candidates with non-Engineering background as the Quantitative Aptitude section is of higher difficulty level. However, they can crack it if they work on the fundamentals of Math and practice questions of all difficulty levels. It will take time but they will be able to crack XAT's quant section if they dedicate extra hours to it. Aspirants can find XAT study material online in various online study groups. Students’ groups on Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, etc. share study material with each other. One can also download MBA exam preparation apps to get relevant and useful study material.

The good part about XAT is that, it has different cut offs for candidates belonging to different academic backgrounds. As part of its commitment to academic diversity, the institute has lower cut offs for candidates from non-engineering background than candidates from engineering background.

Q:   Where to check XLRI PI shortlist for MBA?
A:

Candidates who will be shortlisted for MBA PI on the basis of XAT score, will receive the notification by XLRI in their registered email.

XLRI Selection Process: GD and WAT

The GD and WAT are closely linked in the XLRI process. Candidates are seated around a circular or semi-circular table with panellists observing the GD and WAT process. XLRI GD and WAT is conducted in the following format:

  • XLRI GD Process: Candidates are given a topic or a short case study and allowed a few minutes to read and think. Open discussion lasts about 15 to 20 minutes. At the end of the discussion, each candidate is given 30 seconds to summarise their individual takeaways or conclusions.
  • XLRI WAT Process: Immediately following the GD, candidates are given 15 minutes to write an essay of approximately 200 words on the exact same topic discussed during the GD. Candidates are provided with a notepad and must follow strict instructions, such as not writing on the back of the page unless permitted.

XLRI Past GD WAT Topics

Some of the XLRI GD topics from past selection process is mentioned below:

  • Result-driven performance evaluation leads to burnout
  • New age marketing
  • AI will replace more managerial roles than it will create
  • Digital surveillance improves productivity but erodes trust
  • Should workers have the right not to pick up calls after office hours?
  • Government subsidies for startups distort the principles of a free market
  • Should gig workers be given the same rights as full-time employees?

The nature of the interview varies heavily depending on the panel and the candidate's profile, but questions generally fall into the following categories:

  • SOP and Work Experience
  • Past academic record

XLRI PI Questions Related to SOP and Work Experience

Once the candidates are shortlisted based on their XAT results, they are required to fill SOP form and choose a slot to appear for the interview process. Candidates are asked questions related to their submitted SOP. In addition to the questions based on SOP, candidates are asked questions related to their previous work experience (if any).

  • As per the analysis of more than 10 interview transcripts, panellists will cross-question candidates on the projects and roles they mentioned in their CV to verify authenticity.
  • If a candidate mentions an entrepreneurial venture or startup experience, they will be asked about revenue models, ethical dilemmas, hiring processes, and operational challenges.
  • Candidates must prepare themselves to defend everything they have written in their SOP, including hobbies, books they read, and long-term career goals.

XLRI Interview Questions Related to UG Academics

Candidates who do not have work experience to talk about may be asked about their past academics during the XLRI interview process. As per the XLRI interview experience shared by the shortlisted candidates, panellists provide a deep emphasis on technical questions related to the UG degree course. Check what candidates from different academic backgrounds were asked previously:

  • Engineering Students: One candidate was asked to explain calculus. Candidates were asked heavy technical questions like derivatives of tan 5x, or explaining derivatives to a layman, fluid mechanics, quantum mechanics, law of conservation of energy, and electrical vs electronic components.
  • Arts/Science Students: A psychology graduate was asked about applications of psychology in business and marketing. Another candidate was asked to prove that an empty glass matters without using their mind.

XLRI Interview Questions for Stress Testing

XLRI interviews also include stress-building questions to test a candidate's composure during difficult situations. Panellists may yawn or look away to distract the candidate during the interview. Sometimes, interview panellists also refute correct answers to see if a candidate remains confident or crumbles under pressure.

  • Example 1: A candidate asked multiple questions after accidentally saying ‘Good Morning’ instead of ‘Good Afternoon.’ The panellists questioned him on spatial awareness, exact time, and definitions of AM and PM.
  • Example 2: A candidate was asked to look around the room, identify something that bugged him, and propose a solution to fix it.
  • Example 3: In an HRM interview, a candidate was asked to choose one of the three panellists to "fire" and justify the decision based on their behaviour during the interview.

XLRI PI Experience: Differences Between BM and HRM Process

The overall structure of the XLRI interview remains the same, irrespective of the programme specialisation. The primary difference between XLRI interview experience for BM and HRM candidate is mentioned below:

  • BM (Business Management): Focuses on market principles, economics, technological impacts on business, and general management. Candidates may be asked to evaluate business models or solve practical operational problems.
  • HRM (Human Resource Management): Focuses on human behaviour, conflict resolution, ethics, and labour laws. Candidates are frequently given role-play scenarios involving difficult employees, ethical dilemmas regarding data privacy, or questions on how to manage layoffs. Panellists will often ask "Why HR?" and expect a realistic, well-thought-out answer rather than a textbook response.

XLRI Personal Interview Tips

Some of the tips for XLRI personal interview are mentioned below:

  1. Candidates must avoid bluffing during an interview. If they do not know the answer to a technical question, they must acknowledge it politely. Guessing or making up answers can lead to cross-questioning and a negative impression.
  2. Candidates must try and stay calm under pressure. Panellists will try to make candidates nervous during the XLRI interview process. Candidates must remain calm, not defensive.
  3. While submitting the SOP form, candidates must avoid writing anything in their SOP which they cannot defend with practical examples and deep knowledge.
  4. Candidates must be prepared for random questions about their hometown, meaning of their name, or bizarre hypothetical scenarios. The goal is to evaluate the thought process, and not just factual knowledge.

Yes, XAT essay writing round can be considered tough, given that you have to present your point with clarity, examples and convincing arguments - all in limited word count. You need to have a lot of practice in writing short, clear and logically structured essays.
