Students will now get an opportunity to study engineering in their regional language at top engineering institutes, including IITs and NITs. The AICTE has allowed colleges to offer engineering programmes in eight regional Indian languages from the 2021-22 academic session.

Now, engineering courses in 8 regional languages

The eight languages in which the courses will be available are Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada and Malayalam. This is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 that promotes regional language as a mode of delivering education. Until now, the mode of delivering lectures was English in almost all the top IITs.

AICTE has translated the first-year course material and it is still working on the second, third and fourth-year programmes. Though the course will be available in regional languages, technical terminology used in course materials will continue to be in English so students do not feel left out.

Option available for only undergraduate courses

When Shiksha contacted Prof Rajendra B Kakde from the AICTE, he said, “Many institutes from various states have applied to AICTE to offer engineering in regional languages. The option will be available for only undergraduate courses and that too for traditional engineering disciplines — mechanical, civil, computer science, electrical and electronic. Our aim is to reach out to all students, especially those from rural and tribal areas, so that they can get quality technical education.”

On being asked how they have translated the course material, he said, “We have faculty who convert course material into other languages. Also, we have software for translation. We promote all languages and have been felicitating teachers for converting course material into regional languages for quite some time now. We have also translated Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and Swayam course material into regional languages.”

Only institutions that have NBA accredited courses can apply for regional option

He further said, “Not all colleges can apply for this option. Colleges can apply only if the programme in which they are seeking approval is accredited with the National Board Of Accreditation (NBA). Besides, students will be acquainted with English as there are some students who do not get sufficient exposure to the language at the school level. Therefore, the colleges will have to offer one compulsory English course.”
