IIT Guwahati will release GATE CSE result 2026 on March 19. Based on previous year’s trends and analysis, for IIT admission, GATE score of 700 to 800 is considered as safe for general category. On the other hand, for NITs, 650 to 750 marks is safe for GATE CSE. Read below for complete details.

Safe score for GATE 2026 CSE: IIT Guwahati has completed conducting GATE exam 2026. Candidates who appeared for GATE CS paper this year can check the safe score to qualify for admission and counselling process. The GATE 2026 result is now available. Candidates who appeared for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering can check safe score for GATE 2026 CSE paper below. The CSE exam was held in two shifts on Feb 8, hence the authorities will use normalisation process to calculate marks. The GATE official answer key 2026 along with GATE 2026 result is now available at candidate login.

What is a safe score in GATE 2026 CSE?

A score in GATE computer science and engineering will be considered as safe only if -

  • It offers you to get admission at top IITs, IISc, and NITs
  • Makes you eligible for top PSU job recruitments
  • Gets you under AIR under 500

Apart from GATE 2026 qualifying marks, which just ensures just meeting the eligibility, a safe score in GATE CS is significantly higher and depends on the following -

IIT Guwahati conducted GATE exam on Feb 7, 8, 14, and 15. Candidates who appeared for the exam can check their scores on the scheduled GATE 2026 result date. To access, scorecard and result, candidates need to provide their login credentials at GOAPS portal.

GATE 2026 Expected CSE cutoff - based on previous year’s trends and analysis

The GATE CSE cutoff mark usually ranges between 29 to 34 marks for general category. This year, the qualifying cutoff is 30 marks for general category. Candidates can check expected cutoff marks below.

What is a Safe Score for GATE CSE: IITs and NITs (Category-Wise)

Candidates can check the expected safe score for GATE computer science and engineering for top IITs and NITs below -

IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Delhi

70 to 80+ marks for general category, 60 to 75 marks for EWS, and 50 to 60 marks for SC/ST


For specialisations, like AI, Data Sciene, and Machine Learning, 75+ marks in GATE is highly recommended, which is roughly GATE AIR under 200

For IISc Bangalore

75 to 85+ marks in General category (AIR under 100)

NIT Surathkal and NIT Trichy

50 to 60 marks in GATE for General Category, 45 to 55 marks for OBC, and 35 to 45 marks for ST/SC category

Important NOTE:

  • For top NIT admission, a GATE score of 650 - 750 can be safe. On the other hand, for mid-tier NITs, a GATE score of 500 - 600 will be required, and for new NITs, GATE score between 400 to 500 will be required.
  • For top IITs, a GATE score of 700 to 800 will be required, depending on branch/discipline. On the other hand, for new IITs, a GATE score between 500 - 600 will be required. 
  • For PSU recruitment, a GATE AIR under 200 will be safe for getting into the shortlist criteria.

GATE 2026 EE paper was moderate comprising 10 to 15  NATs, MCQs had 35 to 40 questions, and MSQs had 12 to 15 questions (approximately).

Yes, ITT Guwahati released GATE 2026 qualifying cutoff marks for all subjects on March 28. Candidates can check passing mark of respective papers now.

Aspirants with GATE scores can get admission in M.Tech programme at IIIT Pune. The seats are allotted via CCMT Counselling. In 2025, the closing GATE cutoff was 354 for Electronics & Communication Engineering and 536 for CSE. The cutoffs are quite competitive considering the limited seats available
