Is GATE Score of 500 enough for MTech admission at IITs?
The simple answer to this is “Yes”, but it has several conditions and factors to it. Out of this, one of the most important factor that a candidate needs to understand is that GATE is conducted for 30 papers and in multiple sessions. The threshold of GATE 2026 qualifying marks can vary for all branches.
For example,
- For CSE, the minimum qualifying score for top IITs often sits between 750 - 800+ range (safe). However, for the same branch, if you apply in mid IITs, then the acceptance rate of GATE score can be low (somewhere around 600 - 700).
- For new IITs like IIT Mandi, IIT Palakkad, etc. students with a GATE score of 500 have high chances to get MTech admission.
Apart from the above, other factors that can help you get a seat in IIT with 500 qualifying score are -
- GATE reservation criteria
- Choosing less demanding (interdisciplinary branches/specialisations)
- Opt for alternative options, such as MTech admission at NITs
- Otherwise, candidates can also register for state-level MTech engineering exams
Since 500 score in GATE sits in the middle ground, candidates need to have a strategic approach and plan carefully for GATE counselling 2026.

GATE 2026 reservation criteria
As mentioned above, several factors can affect the GATE cutoff along with scores, and reservation criteria is one of them. Let’s understand:
- For the General category, a score of 500 is often on the low side for popular MTech branches in top IITs. In such cases, it is better to look for interdisciplinary courses or new IITs.
- For OBC-NCL and EWS, there is moderate chance for getting core branches in mid-tier IITs and new IITs.
- For SC/ST and PwD categories, scoring 500 in GATE have good chances in getting into top IITs in popular branches like EE, ME, and ECE.

Old IITs Vs New IITs
For old IITs, such as IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, etc., getting admission to MTech highly competitive. Hence, for a general category candidate with 500 score, the chances are low. However, you can try for interdisciplinary programmes like -
- Energy Studies
- Environmental Science
- Industrial Management
These programmes mainly accept with low GATE cutoff scores.
In addition, many IITs also provide research assistantships (RA) and MS (research) programs, which usually accept low GATE scores for admission. However, the selection process requires interview or a written test.
On the other hand, for new or mid-tier IITs, like IIT Mandi, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Jammu, etc., getting admission with a 500 score is quite possible. We advise students to do a full research and look for placement and research opportunities before applying.

On the other hand, branches civil engineering, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering often require a GATE cutoff score between 500 - 600 in mid-IITs.
Now, let’s talk about low demand or niche engineering branches, such as textile engineering, mining engineering, etc have low GATE 2026 cutoff scores.

In GATE, normalisation process generally makes a gap of 4 to 7 marks (approximately) between actual and normalised scores. However, if difficulty level of paper was high then the marks might increase. On other hand, for easier paper, marks may reduce offering fairness across sessions.
