Is GATE Score of 500 enough for MTech admission at IITs?

The simple answer to this is “Yes”, but it has several conditions and factors to it. Out of this, one of the most important factor that a candidate needs to understand is that GATE is conducted for 30 papers and in multiple sessions. The threshold of GATE 2026 qualifying marks can vary for all branches.

For example,

  • For CSE, the minimum qualifying score for top IITs often sits between 750 - 800+ range (safe). However, for the same branch, if you apply in mid IITs, then the acceptance rate of GATE score can be low (somewhere around 600 - 700).
  • For new IITs like IIT Mandi, IIT Palakkad, etc. students with a GATE score of 500 have high chances to get MTech admission.

Apart from the above, other factors that can help you get a seat in IIT with 500 qualifying score are -

  • GATE reservation criteria
  • Choosing less demanding (interdisciplinary branches/specialisations)
  • Opt for alternative options, such as MTech admission at NITs
  • Otherwise, candidates can also register for state-level MTech engineering exams

Since 500 score in GATE sits in the middle ground, candidates need to have a strategic approach and plan carefully for GATE counselling 2026

Candidates can check the factors for the GATE cutoff rank below -

GATE 2026 reservation criteria

As mentioned above, several factors can affect the GATE cutoff along with scores, and reservation criteria is one of them. Let’s understand:

  • For the General category, a score of 500 is often on the low side for popular MTech branches in top IITs. In such cases, it is better to look for interdisciplinary courses or new IITs.
  • For OBC-NCL and EWS, there is moderate chance for getting core branches in mid-tier IITs and new IITs.
  • For SC/ST and PwD categories, scoring 500 in GATE have good chances in getting into top IITs in popular branches like EE, ME, and ECE.

Old IITs Vs New IITs

For old IITs, such as IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, etc., getting admission to MTech highly competitive. Hence, for a general category candidate with 500 score, the chances are low. However, you can try for interdisciplinary programmes like -

  • Energy Studies
  • Environmental Science
  • Industrial Management

These programmes mainly accept with low GATE cutoff scores

In addition, many IITs also provide research assistantships (RA) and MS (research) programs, which usually accept low GATE scores for admission. However, the selection process requires interview or a written test.

On the other hand, for new or mid-tier IITs, like IIT Mandi, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Jammu, etc., getting admission with a 500 score is quite possible. We advise students to do a full research and look for placement and research opportunities before applying.

Branch Popularity and Specialisations

Not all branches are equal in terms of GATE IIT cutoff. For branches like CSE, ECE, ME and DA, often requires 800+ as a safe score for general category. On the other hand, branches civil engineering, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering often require a GATE cutoff score between 500 - 600 in mid-IITs.

Now, let’s talk about low demand or niche engineering branches, such as textile engineering, mining engineering, etc have low GATE 2026 cutoff scores

How to plan smartly for GATE Counselling with 500 Score?

Candidates who have secured 50 marks in GATE must plan smartly for admission and counselling process. Here are a few steps and strategies one can consider while participating in GATE 2026 counselling

Download GATE Scorecard

IIT Guwahati will issue GATE 2026 scorecard from March 27 onwards. Candidates can download their result scorecard at GOAPS using enrollment ID and password. It is advised to keep multiple printout and scanned copy of the scorecard to apply for COAP counselling.

Register for COAP

Candidates must note that IIT offer admission to MTech programmes through Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP). Aspirants who want to apply for IITs must register at COAP, once the website is activated. Every year, 23+ IITs participate in COAP and upload their cutoff scores and offers. Candidates must track COAP dates carefully and register within the deadline.

The GATE 2026 COAP counselling is conducted in rounds. Many new IITs and less popular branches also release spot round counselling for vacant seats.

Apply at Respective IITs

Before the COAP website is activated, many IITs activate their application portal for MTech admission. Candidates are advised to keep a track of their desired institutions (where they want to apply) and keep all documents ready. Make a list of colleges with branches in advance, so that it can be easy at the time of choice filling and locking.

IIT Madras will activate the GATE 2026 MTech admission portal on March 28. Candidates must go through the documents required and keep them ready.

Check: IIT Madras GATE 2026 MTech admission dates out, registration begins from March 28

Keep Backup Options

If an IIT is not looking feasible for your desired branch or score, then look for alternative options. A GATE score of 500 can give you seats at NITs in good specialisations. Check GATE cutoff 2026 for NIT admission.

In GATE, normalisation process generally makes a gap of 4 to 7 marks (approximately) between actual and normalised scores. However, if difficulty level of paper was high then the marks might increase. On other hand, for easier paper, marks may reduce offering fairness across sessions.
