GATE 2026 reservation criteria
As mentioned above, several factors can affect the GATE cutoff along with scores, and reservation criteria is one of them. Let’s understand:
- For General category, a score of 500 is often on the low side for popular MTech branches in top IITs. In such cases, it is better to look for interdisciplinary courses or new IITs.
- For OBC-NCL and EWS, there is moderate chance for getting core branches in mid-tier IITs and new IITs.
- For SC/ST and PwD categories, scoring 500 in GATE have good chances in getting into top IITs in popular branches like EE, ME, and ECE.

Old IITs Vs New IITs
For old IITs, such as IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, etc., getting admission to MTech highly competitive. Hence, for a general category candidate with 500 score, chances are low. However, you can try for interdisciplinary programmes like -
- Energy Studies
- Environmental Science
- Industrial Management
These programmes mainly accept with low GATE cutoff scores.
In addition, many IITs also provide research assistantships (RA) and MS (research) programs, which usually accept low GATE scores for admission. However, the selection process requires interview or a written test.
On the other hand, for new or mid-tier IITs, like IIT Mandi, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Jammu, etc., getting admission with a 500 score is quite possible. We advise students to do a full research and look for placement and research opportunities before applying.

Register for COAP
Candidates must note that IIT offer admission to MTech programmes through Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP). Aspirants who want to apply for IITs must register at COAP, once the website is activated. Every year, 23+ IITs participate in COAP and upload their cutoff scores and offers. Candidates must track COAP dates carefully and register within the deadline.
The GATE 2026 COAP counselling is conducted in rounds. Many new IITs and less popular branches also release spot round counselling for vacant seats.
Apply at Respective IITs
Before the COAP website is activated, many IITs activate their application portal for MTech admission. Candidates are advised to keep a track of their desired institutions (where they want to apply) and keep all documents ready. Make a list of colleges with branches in advance, so that it can be easy at the time of choice filling and locking.
Keep Backup Options
If an IIT is not looking feasible for your desired branch or score, then look for alternative options. A GATE score of 500 can give you seats at NITs in good specialisations. Check GATE cutoff 2026 for NIT admission.
