What is the CLAT exam?

Before moving further, let's have a quick look into what CLAT is and why it is considered competitive and why students often search how to improve CLAT score? The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a national-level entrance exam conducted for admissions of qualified candidates into undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) law courses.

It is conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs), and gives candidates access to 24 premier National Law Universities and over 60 affiliated private law colleges across the country. Qualified candidates can get admission into an integrated 5-year B.A. LL.B, B.B.A. LL.B, or B.Com. LL.B. degrees, while the PG exam is for a 1-year LL.M. programme.

Why is CLAT a tough nut to crack?

What makes candidates look for ways on how to improve CLAT score, is that this competitive exam is intense. Roughly 75,000 to 100,000 students apply annually. However,  the total number of available seats across participating NLUs is approx 3,000 to 4,000 for UG courses, meaning less than 4% to 5% secure a seat in an NLU.

Due to it being a competitive exam, a lot of candidates apply for it. Rather than testing prior legal knowledge, it assesses high-level comprehension, critical thinking, logic, data interpretation, and speed.  The paper features passage-based questions requiring candidates to solve 120 questions in 120 minutes, making extreme time management a critical hurdle and that is where scoring high in CLAT exam becomes tricky.

To prepare for  CLAT exam effectively, it becomes imperative to -

1. Master  Art of Contextual Reading

The numero uno rule on how to improve CLAT score is to master the art of contextual reading. CLAT is a reading-driven exam. Every section except Quantitative Techniques relies on textual passages.

  • Spend 45 minutes reading editorial pages from The Hindu or The Indian Express.

  • Do not just stick to legal news. Read philosophy, economics, environmental science, and history to build comfort with diverse prose styles.

  • While reading, constantly ask yourself: What is the author's primary argument? What evidence supports it? What tone is being used?

  • Train to skip filler words and lock onto transition markers (e.g., however, consequently, moreover) that signal a shift in  author's logic.

2. Section-by-Section Enhancement Strategies

Legal Reasoning

To irmprove the CLAT score, first subject that needs student's immediate attention is Legal Reasoning. As ignoring LR is one of the common mistakes students make while attempting the CLAT Mock Test. LR tests a student's ability to apply legal principles to factual scenarios. Candidates do not need a prior degree in law, but they must require legal acumen to solve the questions.

  • Isolate Principle: Read legal principle carefully. Treat it as absolute truth, even if it contradicts the real-world knowledge.

  • Map to  Facts: Break down factual scenario and map it strictly against  elements of  principle.

  • Avoid Emotional Bias: Do not choose an answer because it feels "morally right." Choose  one that strictly follows  provided rule.

Logical Reasoning

Logical Reasoning evaluates a candidate's capacity to analyze arguments, identify flaws, and draw valid conclusions.

  • Identify Critical Elements: For every passage, clearly pinpoint premise,  conclusion, and  underlying assumptions.

  • Strengn and Weaken: Practice questions that ask to weaken or strengthen an argument. Look for answers that attack or support  unstated assumptions.

  • Watch for Fallacies: Learn to spot common logical flaws like correlation vs. causation, slippery slopes, and circular reasoning.

English Language

It looks easy, but actually is it not. English tests vocabulary in context, grammar, and deep textual comprehension. Hence candidates must know how to improve Vocabulary for CLAT.

  • Instead of memorizing isolated word lists, try to deduce meaning of unfamiliar words based on  surrounding sentences.

  • Practice summarizing a 450-word passage in a single sentence. If the summary matches the correct answer option, comprehension is on track.

Current Affairs including General Knowledge

This is the highest-yielding section for saving time and locking in quick points. However if taken lightly, it can dent student's chances of improving their CLAT scores. Students must also check these tips on how to prepare General Knowledge (GK) for CLAT 2027 to score well in the CLAT exam.

  • Stick to two reliable monthly current affairs compendiums rather than exploring dozens of websites.

  • CLAT asks straightforward trivia. Understand historical background, legal implications, behind major national and international events.

Quantitative Techniques

Do not ignore this section. Securing 8 to 10 marks here can completely alter the final rank.

  • Focus on Data Interpretation:  exam tests school-level math (Percentages, Ratios, Profit & Loss, Averages) presented via charts, graphs, and caselets.

  • Daily Practice: Solve at least two data interpretation sets every day to maintain speed and calculation accuracy.

3. Mock Test Strategy

Taking mock tests without deep analysis is a waste of time. To break through score plateaus, reinvent mock routine.

Take Mock Test - Calculate Net Score - Categorize Errors - Targeted Review - Adjust Strategy

Spend double time analyzing a mock than writing it, as analyzing it will help candidates figure out -

  1. Conceptual Error

  2. Behavioral Error

  3. Strategic Error

4. Time Management

CLAT requires students to solve 22-24 passages and answer 120 questions in 120 minutes.

  • On average, students have 60 seconds per question (including reading time). If they are stuck on an option for more than 90 seconds, mark it for review and move on.

  • Spend 10 seconds glancing at a passage before reading it. If  language looks overly convoluted or the topic is entirely alien, skip the entire passage and return to it at the end if time permits.

  • Only guess if they can confidently eliminate two incorrect options. Blind guessing will systematically erode the hard-earned score.

How to solve CLAT question paper in the exam?

Experiment with section order during mock tests to find psychological flow. A standard effective flow looks like this:

  • Choose a heavy reading section where they are naturally confident (e.g., Legal or English).

  • Switch to Current Affairs/GK to score fast points and rest brain from heavy reading.

  • Solve Logical Reasoning and remaining sections while mental stamina is still stable.

  • Dedicate  final 15-20 minutes to Quantitative Techniques and cleaning up unattempted questions.

Bottomline

As now we have a general idea about what the exam is, how to prepare for it, how to improve CLAT score and what are the best practices, it becomes imperative to understand three things that needs to be followed - Patience, Perseverance and Practice. If candidates have prepapred well enough and have these three qualities, no body can stop them from qualifying in this exam. All the best!

Yes, you can apply for admission to Techno India University for the BA LLB (Hons) course without a CLAT score. You just need to appear for the TNJEE entrance exam.

Students can increase their reading speed through consistent practice. They should build a strong vocabulary and practice passage-based questions daily.

CLAT does not publish a fixed count for Number System questions. The UG exam stays largely passage-based. This topic supports calculation inside Quantitative Techniques passages. It does not appear as standalone questions.

Number System questions cover many types. These include basic property checks, combined divisibility conditions, HCF and LCM problems, remainder patterns and multi condition reasoning. They test calculation speed and accuracy.

Students can improve step by step. Learn divisibility rules. Practise HCF and LCM daily. Work through remainder questions carefully. Regular revision of common traps also builds accuracy and speed.

There is no single fixed book for this topic. Students often use standard Class 10 level maths books. Combine these with regular practice sets and previous year papers to build accuracy.

Students should start early. Practice Number System alongside other Quantitative Techniques topics. Strong basics make combined divisibility and multi condition questions easier later.

Number System is not a separate scored CLAT topic. But the calculation skills help with passage-based Quantitative Techniques questions. Skipping it fully is not wise. Most passages need quick, accurate number work.

No, CLAT-UG is not a mandatory entrance exam for getting admission into BBDU BBA LLB course. Candidates with a valid score will however get preference during admission over other candidates.

MIT-WPU, Pune does considers CLAT scores for admission in BA LLB (Hons) course. However, it is not mandatory. The university also considers scores in MHCET Law and MIT-WPU CET for admission.
