CLAT 2025 counselling process is completely online including, registration, publishing of the merit list, and then seat allotment as per the preferences marked by candidates. Candidates can accept or upgrade or exit from their allotted seat in any round of counselling. Once their choice of seat is allotted then they can complete their admission by paying the counselling and admission fee as required.

CLAT Counselling Registration 2026

The CLAT Counselling Process is likely to begin in last week of December. Aspirants whose names will appear on the CLAT Merit List 2026 have to first register themselves. Any candidate who will not register for the CLAT 2026 Counselling process will not be allowed to participate in counselling for Common Law Admission Test.

How to Register for CLAT 2026 Counselling?

Candidates invited for the counselling and seat allotment process will have to register in online mode by following the steps mentioned below:

Step 1: Login to the registered accounts

Firstly, candidates have to login to their registered accounts by following the below steps:

  • Go to the official website of CLAT 2026- consortiumofnlus.ac.in/
  • Enter mobile number and password in the space provided on the Home page
  • Click on Login
  • Click on the counselling registration link

Step 2: Update NLU preferences

Next, candidates have to update their preferences for minimum five National Law Universities (NLUs). There are a total 24 NLUs in India that offer five-year integrated LLB courses to students basis their CLAT score. On the other hand, 20 NLUs in India offer LLM courses to students basis their CLAT score.

Candidates will then have to update their preferences only after gaining sufficient knowledge about the NLUs, their courses, fees, seats and more.Candidates will be considered for admission only in the NLUs selected by them. They will not be considered for admission in any other NLU.

Step 3: Pay CLAT counselling fee

Lastly, candidates have to pay the CLAT counselling fee of INR 50,000 in online mode via credit card/debit card/internet banking. A confirmation email will be sent to the registered email address and phone number of candidates once the fee was successfully paid.

It must be noted that candidates have to pay the counselling fee at this stage. Any candidate failing to pay the counselling fee will not be considered for admission. However,  the counselling fee for CLAT 2026 will be adjusted with the course fee once a seat is allotted to a candidate. It may also be noted that mere counselling registration does not guarantee admission. The registration process is followed by CLAT seat allotment process in which candidates will be allotted seats based on merit and their NLU preferences.

What after CLAT 2026 Seat Allotment Result - Counselling Process

All candidates who will be allotted a seat in any round of counselling are advised to follow the below steps:

Candidates who have been allotted a seat need to take action on any of the below points:

Thereafter, the candidate need not participate in further seat allotment rounds and complete the remaining admission formalities (mentioned below).
  • Apply for Upgrade:This option is used when candidates want to change the allotted institute to his or her higher choice (upward shifting). Such candidates will have to wait for next seat allotment list and they will be allotted seats in their preferred college depending on the availability of vacant seats in that college. Candidates choosing upgrade are considered active participants, therefore, they too need to complete the remaining admission formalities (mentioned below)
  • Exit from seat allotment:Candidates can choose to exit from the counselling process if they do not wish to participate in the current or further rounds of counselling. It may be noted that once exited, candidates will not be given another chance to participate in the counselling for NLU admissions.

Step 2: Completing admission formalities

After candidates accept the allotted seat or apply for upgrade, they need to upload all the prescribed documents (mentioned above) on the official website for verification. Thereafter, candidates also need to pay the remaining admission fee to the allotted NLU.
