CAT 2026 Quant Preparation Strategy

  • The above table, clearly indicates that Arithmetic, Geometry and Algebra make up 90 percent of CAT Quants sections. It has been seen in the few years that out of 22 questions, these three cover about 19-20 questions. So, the obvious thing is to complete Arithmetic, Geometry and Algebra topics first.
  • However, it does not mean that you completely ignore Number System and Modern Math. Unpredictability of CAT questions is not high but you may not want to take any chance.
  • What is important for a fruitful CAT preparation is to prioritize. Cover Arithmetic, Geometry and Algebra first and extensively.
  • Give one week to each of the topics of Quantitative Aptitude. You can allot more days to topics that you find tougher. First, understand the topics conceptually and then practice sample questions.
  • Target solving 20 questions per day, so if you prepare for 180 days, you shall have practiced about 3600 CAT Quants questions by the exam day. Good source of practice questions are recommended sample paper books and previous years’ CAT question papers.
  • To gain speed and accuracy, attempt minimum 10 -15 sectional CAT mocks and minimum 20-30 full length mocks. Do it consistently and record your progress. With each mock test you should be able to gain more control on the Quantitative Aptitude topics for CAT.
  • In the last month of CAT 2026 preparation, do daily revision. Take up advance level questions for revision to ensure you have covered even the toughest Quant problem from the main three topics.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   What is the latest CAT exam pattern?
A:

As per the latest CAT exam pattern, there will be 68 questions. The format will be MCQ and non-MCQ. VARC will have 24 questions, DILR will have 22 questions and QA will have 22 questions. Each question will carry 3 marks and there will be negative marking of -1 for incorrect answer. Sectional time limit will be 40 minutes.

Q:   Is CAT exam tough for an average student?
A:

CAT is a speed-based test of analytical aptitude, logical reasoning skills, data interpretation and English comprehension. Now, it may sound tough, but these are the skills which we are taught in school so there is nothing new to learn. What is required is to learn these subjects at advanced level. If you are an average student but have studied Science or Commerce in Class-12 and graduation, you will find a lot of familiar topics in Data Interpretation, Quantitative Aptitude and Logical Reasoning. All you will need is brush up the basics and practice the concepts on advanced-level problems.

However, since the competition is so high in CAT and less than 95 percentile can break your dream of joining a top college like IIM, the preparation for CAT requires a lot of focus, dedication, discipline and diligence. If you can do that, despite being an average student, you can crack the CAT exam.

Hope it was helpful!!!

Q:   How many CAT mock tests to practice to score 99 percentile?
A:
Experts recommend that aspirants must practice at least 40 CAT mock tests to score above 99 percentile well in the exam. Most of the CAT test takers take up to 50 mock tests of various types and difficulty level. CAT toppers in previous years have practiced even up to 80 mock tests during their preparation. However, candidates must decide the number of CAT mock tests depending on their control and confidence on topics as the exam day comes closer. Mock tests are the best way to judge your performance viz. The important topics of CAT. The more one practices CAT mock tests, the more accurate they get in solving questions from all subjects. It is very important to know which formula to apply to which type question to solve the problem accurately. Mock tests help candidates in this aspect which is why practicing mock tests is most important in CAT preparation.

Q:   Is it possible to score 99.99 percentile in CAT in first attempt?
A:

Yes, it is possible to score 99.99 percentile in CAT in first attempt. Many toppers of previous years' are such candidates. One must study in a focussed manner and do a lot of mock test practice. Exam day strategy is also crucial for better performance.

Q:   Is it possible to prepare for CAT with mock tests only?
A:

Yes, it is possible to prepare for CAT exam with mock tests only if you have appeared for the exam previously and have complete control on the topics included in the CAT syllabus. Yes, CAT exam is MCQ type, meaning there are no subjective type questions wherein you have to write a lot. In CAT every question is to be answered in one word or option. However, all questions don't have MCQ options, some are Type In The Answer (TITA) questions.
