MBBS degree fees is one of the most searched queries for each medical aspirant, especially after clearing NEET and while participating in the NEET counselling process. MBBS course fees are one of the highest in India as compared to other courses. Although the MBBS degree fee structure is lower in the Government medical colleges in India, that of the private colleges can go up to crores. However, there are some private colleges with low fee structures as well. This article of Shiksha brings the MBBS fees in government colleges and MBBS fees in private colleges in India.
Explore colleges based on NEET
When we talk about MBBS, the question of its fee is always in the spotlight. The five years and six months course including one year of rotational internship is an expensive course. But if the student is able to secure a good rank in the NEET exam, they will be eligible to get admission to government medical colleges. In government medical colleges, candidates can take admission in their budget. Hence, admissions to government medical colleges are always the priority of NEET aspirants. During the counselling process of NEET, after the seat allotment is done, candidates will have to pay the requisite MBBS admission fees to confirm the admission.
NEET or National Eligibility cum Entrance Test is a paper-and-pencil-based test (PBT) of three hours or 180 minutes duration. There will be a total of 180 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), all of which will be compulsory to attempt. The syllabus of the exam consists of Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects. The Biology subject is segregated between Zoology and Botany. On the other hand, the Chemistry subject is segregated into Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry. Unlike last year, the subjects will not be divided into two sections.
According to the marking scheme, each correct question carries 4 marks, and there is a negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer. No marks will be awarded or deducted for unattempted questions. The following table brings the structure of the NEET exam.
Sections | Number of Questions | Total Marks |
---|---|---|
Physics Section | 45 | 180 |
Chemistry Section | 45 | 180 |
Botany Section | 45 | 180 |
Zoology Section | 45 | 180 |
Yes, the NEET examination pattern suggests that there will be negative marking. For every incorrect answer, one mark will be deducted and 4 marks will be awarded for every correct answer. However, negative marking will not be applicable for the unattempted questions. Since there is a negative marking scheme for wrong answers, candidates must answer questions carefully and select the questions carefully which they are sure about the accuracy.
AIIMS is the top medical institute in India and interestingly most of the NEET toppers choose AIIMS Delhi to pursue MBBS. At present, there are 23 AIIMS campuses in India out of which 19 are functional and the rest are under construction or semi-functional. Besides, AIIMS there are other institutes in India as well which hold a good reputation and have been ranked by NIRF as well.

There are three Central Universities which offer MBBS, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and the University of Delhi (DU). Since 2018, Medical colleges affiliated with DU were also considered for admission to central universities. The MBBS fees to be paid after clearing NEET and getting admission offers at the Central Universities are given below.

MBBS Fee in Deemed University Affiliated Medical Colleges
Yes, MSc is quite affordable at AIIMS Delhi. The total tuition fee for MSc is INR 1,400. Candidates need to pay a one-time fee of INR 25 at the time of admission. AIIMS is a government institute and has a very low fee compared to other Medical colleges of India. Due to limited seats and high competition only a few aspirants get a chance to pursue a course from the institute.
Yes, AIIMS Delhi is almost free for all the programmes including MBBS MD MS PG Diploma M.Ch. DM DNB etc. For MBBS the admission charges (non-refundable) are INR 25 at the time of admission and INR 35 per day for the first 10 days. Other than this, there is no annual fee at AIIMS Delhi. Students must make a one-time payment between INR 5,000 to INR 6,000 which is the fee for the complete MBBS course of 5.5 years.
There will be no sectional qualifying criterion for NEET 2025. NTA releases overall qualifying marks or cutoff marks for each category. The overall marks will be considered while preparing the rank list for NEET. But to ensure a good score, candidates must ensure a high number of attempts with full accuracy. A skewed performance might hamper the overall marks obtained in NEET.
Deemed Universities are the Universities having a status of autonomy granted by the Directorate of Higher Education (DHE) under MHRD, on the advice of UGC. Deemed to be Universities have all authority of full autonomy or independence in deciding courses, syllabi, admissions and fees. Some Deemed to be Universities can also grant degrees on their own. Deemed-to-be Universities, which continue to perform well, can get the status of full-fledged universities.
There are more than 7,000 MBBS seats offered by various Deemed-to-be Universities. These universities offer MBBS degrees under the management quota and General quota as well. The MBBS fee structures for these universities are given in the table below.
MBBS Fee in Private Medical College
Private universities are approved institutions by UGC. However, these universities do not rely on central or state governments. They can approve and disburse degrees but cannot have off-campus colleges or affiliate with an institution/college. “They can establish off-campus centre (s) within the concerned State after their existence of five years and with the prior approval of the University Grants Commission,” states the UGC website. Unlike state and central universities, which have a ‘Chancellor’ as the head, a private university is always headed by a ‘President’ or ‘Chairperson’.
Private institutes have the liberty to decide their own fee but few states such as Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka have capped the annual fee for privately held MBBS colleges. The step was taken to avoid overcharging of fees to the students. Besides the general quota, these private institutions offer a large number of seats based on management and the NRI quota. Below is the approximate MBBS fee in private medical colleges in India as per the quota:
- Management Quota: MBBS degree fee in private colleges under the Management Quota ranges from INR 4,00,000 in medical colleges of Kerala to as high as INR 17,95,000 in the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Jaipur, Rajasthan.
- NRI Quota: The MBBS fee for the NRI quota in the various private medical colleges is also decided by the individual institutions. The average annual MBBS degree fee for students applying under the NRI quota is 25,000 US Dollars.
- Government Quota: A number of private colleges in the country have a certain number of seats allocated under the state government quota. MBBS fee for these seats, even in the private institution, is less than compared to the other categories and lies somewhere between INR 10,000 to INR 7,00,000 annually.
- Other: Various private or self-financing MBBS colleges in Karnataka also offer a quota categorised as ‘other’, the MBBS fee for which is in between INR 21,00,000 to INR 40,00,000 per annum.
MBBS Fee Structure: Components of MBBS fees
Students should be aware of all the components of the MBBS fee, the above-mentioned fee structure is just one component of the many. Fee components vary from course to course depending upon the curriculum of the programme. For MBBS there are components which can be categorised as seminars and conferences and may incur a decent amount of money into the MBBS fee structure. As these conferences and seminars provide certifications and study materials, hence, these are paid seminars. Besides this, some colleges also charge laboratory fees separately. Apart from these two, there are basic requirements MBBS students have to pay for them separately. Below are the components of the MBBS fee structure:
- Tuition fee
- Laboratory fee
- Personal expenses
- Conferences and Seminar Charges
- Boarding (Hostel or Paying Guest)
- Travel (If the campus is away from the home town)
- Course material (Notes, Xerox, books, online subscriptions)
- Mess or food charges
- Internet
- Laptop and computer
- Miscellaneous expenses
MBBS Scholarships in India
The average course fee in MBBS government colleges is around INR 8,000 to INR 35.000 per annum, which is affordable. However, there are many students who are still not able to pay this much fee to pursue MBBS, to fulfil their dreams there are several scholarships for MBBS students available in India. As it is evident that seats in medical colleges in India are fewer, even after securing a rank in the NEET exam it is not guaranteed that the candidate will get admission to a government medical college.
The other option left is to opt for private medical colleges, and the fee in private medical colleges is way too high as compared to government medical colleges. Hence, again a larger section requires a scholarship to pursue MBBS.

As per the NEET exam pattern, the Biology section has the highest number of questions. Out of the total 360 questions, 90 questions come from the Biology section. The Biology section is segregated into two subjects, Botany and Zoology, each consisting of 45 questions, making the total number of questions to be 90. Physics and Chemistry sections have 45 questions each. Hence, Biology as a subject carries the highest weightage in the NEET question paper.
