
NEET Syllabus 2026 contains three subjects- Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The NEET Biology section is further divided into Botany and Zoology. The topics to be prepared from these subjects are mentioned in the NEET exam syllabus. Candidates planning to appear for NEET 2026 must familiarise themselves with the syllabus of NEET UG, as it is the first step towards exam preparation. The NEET syllabus is in line with Class 11 and Class 12 curriculum, which is senior secondary level and NCERT-based. Hence, it becomes convenient for Class 11 and 12 students to prepare simultaneously for the NEET exam along with their Board exams.

NEET Exam Pattern 2026
The structure of the NEET question paper is likely to remain the same as last year. According to the latest NEET exam pattern which was revised last year, the optional questions were removed, bringing the total number of questions from 200 to 180. The exam duration was reduced by 20 minutes; the total duration is 180 minutes or three hours. The table below brings the NEET question pattern or the exam structure.

NEET or National Eligibility cum Entrance Test is a paper-and-pencil-based test (PBT) of three hours or 180 minutes duration. There will be a total of 180 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), all of which will be compulsory to attempt. The syllabus of the exam consists of Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects. The Biology subject is segregated between Zoology and Botany. On the other hand, the Chemistry subject is segregated into Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry. Unlike last year, the subjects will not be divided into two sections.
According to the marking scheme, each correct question carries 4 marks, and there is a negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer. No marks will be awarded or deducted for unattempted questions. The following table brings the structure of the NEET exam.

Maths is not compulsory for NEET. You have numerical in Physics but you do not required Maths in Class 11 and Class 12 to solve those. If you studied Maths in class 10, then you can solve the numericals in Physics. Since NEET has Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects, it would be advantageous for you if you are a PCB student. Moreover, in case a candidate has studied PCM and not Biology, even as an additional subject, then he/she will not be eligible to appear for NEET exam. Hence, Maths is not compulsory, rather not required for NEET. But having basic mathematical knowledge and skills would be an added advantage.

Physical Chemistry Syllabus for NEET
There are a total of eight units under the Physical Chemistry section. The unit-wise chapters and topics are given below.
Unit I: Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry
Matter and its nature, Dalton's atomic theory: Concept of atom, molecule, element. and compound. Laws of chemical combination; Atomic and molecular masses, mole concept, molar mass, percentage composition, empirical and molecular formulae: Chemical equations and
stoichiometry.
Unit II: Atomic Structure
Nature of electromagnetic radiation, photoelectric effect; Spectrum of the hydrogen atom. Bohr model of a hydrogen atom - its postulates, derivation of the relations for the energy of the electron and radii of the different orbits, limitations of Bohr's model; Dual nature of matter, de Broglie's relationship. Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Elementary ideas of quantum mechanics, quantum mechanics, the quantum mechanical model of the atom, its important features. Yes, NCERT books are sufficient to complete the NEET syllabus. A number of past years' NEET toppers have claimed that they referred only to NCERT books for preparation. NCERT textbooks act as the base to complete the syllabus and develop conceptual clarity and understanding of the topics and chapters. However, for practice purposes, students may refer to other books and resources as well. It is advised that while starting the NEET preparation, candidates refer to the NCERT books and move towards other books and advanced resources after that.

No, the topic or chapter on earthworm is not included in the NEET Biology syllabus. The NEET syllabus underwent changes wherein certain topics were removed and various topics have been added from other state Boards. In the NEET revised syllabus, there was no mention of the Earthworms topic. Under the unit of Structural Organisation in Animals and Plants, the topic of 'Nervous and reproductive of an insect and Frog.' Based on last year's syllabus, it is estimated that the insect is cockroach, along with frog. Hence, it can be estimated that the Earthworm topic will not be included in the NEET Biology syllabus as well.
Candidates belonging to the General category should secure 50 percentile. Those belonging to the PwD General category has to secure 45 percentile. The NEET cutoff percentile for the reserved category candidates is 40. The exact qualifying marks or cutoff scores will be announced by NTA along with the scorecards. This year, General category candidates had to score minimum 137 marks to qualify for the exam.
The National Testing Agency (NTA), had clarified the reason behind changing the NEET 2024 syllabus. NTA stated, "Due to the COVID-19 scenario, various School Boards deleted portions of each subject's syllabus. The deleted portion is still not being taken back by these Boards. Yes, the NEET 2025 exam pattern has been changed. NTA announced the change in the exam pattern on January 25, 2025, to enable candidates prepare accordingly. The optional questions have been removed. Instead of 200 questions, there will now be 180 questions. The total duration of NEET 2025 has been reduced from 200 minutes to 180 minutes or three hours now. Announcing the same, NTA has stated, “Aspirants are hereby informed that the question paper pattern and examination duration will revert to the pre-COVID format. where there will not be any Section B anymore. Hence, there will be a total of 180 compulsory questions (45 questions each in Physics and Chemistry and 90 in Biology) which will be attempted by the candidates in 180 minutes thereby removing any optional questions and extra time introduced due to COVID.”
