IIT Kanpur Brings Experts Together for Workshop on Nano-Indentation and Nano-Mechanics
IIT Kanpur organised a workshop bringing together experts to discuss nano-indentation and nano-mechanics. Check details here
The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK), through its Advanced Centre for Materials Science (ACMS) and in collaboration with the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, hosted a one-day workshop on Nano-Indentation and Nano-Mechanics. Supported by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (formerly the Science and Engineering Research Board), Government of India, along with Bruker Ltd. and Industron Ltd., the workshop attracted around 85 participants, including students and research scholars.
The event began with an inaugural address by Prof. Anish Upadhyaya, Head of ACMS and Professor at IIT Kanpur, who emphasized the centre's role in advancing material characterization for academia, research institutions, and industry. Prof. Nilesh Prakash Gurao, the workshop coordinator, outlined the event’s goals and highlighted the involvement of esteemed experts from top academic institutions and industry.
Prof. Kantesh Balani, Head of the MSE Department and Coordinator for the Indentation Laboratory at ACMS remarked, “At IIT Kanpur, we believe that nanoindentation is not merely a technique but a vital gateway to understanding material behavior at the nanoscale. Our commitment is to provide researchers with advanced tools and knowledge necessary to innovate and push the boundaries of materials science.”

The technical sessions featured insightful presentations from leading experts. Prof. Praveen Kumar from IISc Bangalore introduced a high-throughput mechanical testing technique that integrates cantilever bending tests with digital image correlation. Prof. Manjesh K. Singh from IIT Kanpur explored the nano-mechanics of soft matter through a combined experimental and modelling approach.
Prof. Nagamani Jaya Balila from IIT Bombay demonstrated the use of nanoindentation to study the deformation behaviour of various materials. Dr. Abheepsit Raturi from the University of Tel Aviv, Israel, presented his research on high-temperature nanoindentation in refractory high-entropy alloys, while Mr. Pratyank Rastogi from Industron Ltd. highlighted the latest technological advancements in nanoindentation.
A key highlight of the workshop was an interactive session with Prof. Rita Maurya from NIT Hamirpur, an early user of IIT Kanpur’s nanoindentation facility, who shared her valuable experiences and insights, sparking inspiration among research scholars and encouraging lively discussions. The event concluded with a guided tour of the ACMS research infrastructure, allowing participants to explore the state-of-the-art characterization facilities at IIT Kanpur. The valedictory session also acknowledged the dedicated efforts of student volunteers.
