IIT Kanpur, Indian Army & MES Collaborate on Advancing Sustainable Military Infrastructure

The Indian Army, Military Engineering Services, and IIT Kanpur jointly hosted a seminar focused on sustainable military infrastructure and emerging technologies.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, in collaboration with the Indian Army and Military Engineering Services, hosted a seminar on sustainable military infrastructure and emerging technologies. Building upon the successful partnership established through an MoU between CWE Jhansi and IIT Kanpur in April 2023, the event marked a significant step toward creating carbon-neutral military stations. Major General S K Shrivastava, Chief of Staff, Sudarshan Chakra Corps, inaugurated the seminar, highlighting the strategic importance of reducing reliance on conventional energy sources while ensuring optimal mission readiness.
The event included in-depth panel discussions on three key themes: innovative construction technologies, renewable energy integration, and climate-resilient infrastructure development. Experts from leading institutions such as IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderabad, IISD, CDRI, TERI, and BMTPC shared their insights, joined by representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
This initiative highlights the Indian Army's dedication to adopting sustainable practices while strengthening operational capabilities through technological advancements. The insights from the seminar are expected to play a crucial role in shaping future military infrastructure policies and implementation strategies.
Prof. Tarun Gupta, Dean of Research and Development (DORD), IIT Kanpur, said, "These seminars are a crucial step towards modernizing military infrastructure. By combining IIT Kanpur's research expertise with the Indian Army's operational requirements, we are creating a blueprint for sustainable military installations that will serve as a model for armed forces worldwide. Our institution is proud to contribute to this vital initiative that bridges technological innovation with national security needs."
Ishwer Datt, IDSE, who played a key role in organizing the event, highlighted the practical implications of the discussions: "This seminar is a unique opportunity to bring together experts from diverse fields to discuss practical and scalable solutions for military infrastructure. The participation of industry leaders, academia, and policymakers ensures that the insights shared today will lead to actionable policies and implementations. MES remains committed to adopting the latest technologies to create infrastructure that is not only robust and mission-ready but also aligned with global best practices in sustainability."
