IIT Kanpur Introduces Intelligent LiDAR Sprayer for Orchards; Check Details Here

IIT Kanpur, in collaboration with AV Agritech, has developed a LiDAR-based intelligent sprayer for orchard farming. Equipped with day-and-night capabilities, it uses LiDAR to scan trees, ensuring precise chemical application.
The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK), in partnership with its incubated startup SimDaaS Autonomy Pvt. Ltd. and industry collaborator AV Agritech, has developed a pioneering LiDAR-based intelligent sprayer to transform orchard farming. This innovative technology reduces agrochemical wastage, promotes sustainable agriculture, and boosts efficiency through advanced precision capabilities. Supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the IDEAS TiH, ISI Kolkata project, it marks a significant advancement in smart farming solutions.
Intelligent LiDAR Sprayer for Orchards
The intelligent sprayer, equipped with day-and-night capabilities, uses advanced LiDAR technology to scan trees, ensuring precise chemical application and optimal resource utilization. Integrated with a GPS-enabled mobile app, the system offers real-time updates on sprayed areas, agrochemical usage, and device performance, enabling farmers to monitor and control operations remotely. Its user-friendly design includes waterproof connectors and a plug-and-play setup for easy adoption. Additionally, the system tackles common farming challenges like speed overruns and lane skipping by generating alerts, ensuring enhanced efficiency and reliability.
The intelligent sprayer has undergone extensive field trials, demonstrating its effectiveness in minimizing chemical overuse. Over the next three months, four devices will be deployed in different orchards for further optimization. These trials aim to ensure the system's adaptability to various crops and farming conditions, paving the way for broader adoption. The technology is expected to be commercially launched within 4–5 months, marking a key milestone in the widespread availability of advanced agricultural tools.
Speaking on the occasion, Professor Bharat Lohani said, “The LiDAR-based intelligent sprayer marks a paradigm shift in orchard farming. It combines precision agriculture with cutting-edge technology, addressing the dual challenge of reducing agrochemical overuse and ensuring sustainable farming practices. This innovation empowers farmers with smarter tools while safeguarding the environment for future generations. Our vision is to create solutions that are not only effective but also accessible and practical for farmers across the country, integrating advanced technology into everyday farming.”
