QS Asia University Rankings 2025: India Becomes Most Represented Country, IIT Delhi Tops Among Indian Institutions
IIT Delhi Leads Indian Institutions Among Indian universities, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) has achieved the highest rank at 44th, followed by IIT Bombay at 48th and IIT Madras at 56th. A total of six Indian universities have secured positions in the top 100 of Asia.
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has released the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2025, revealing a significant milestone for Indian higher education. India has emerged as the most represented country in the region, with 162 universities listed out of 984 ranked institutions, surpassing China, which has 132 universities.
IIT Delhi Leads Indian Institutions Among Indian universities, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) has achieved the highest rank at 44th, followed by IIT Bombay at 48th and IIT Madras at 56th. A total of six Indian universities have secured positions in the top 100 of Asia. Notably, under the Southern Asian category, which includes both Indian and Pakistani institutions, IIT Delhi leads the region, securing the top position among 308 universities.
Despite these achievements, only two Indian institutions feature in the top 50, underlining the challenge faced by Indian universities in competing with their counterparts from regions such as Singapore, Hong Kong, and China. IIT Bombay, which ranked 40th in the 2024 edition, maintains a strong position but falls outside the top 50 this year.
Continued Growth in Representation India’s robust representation in the rankings reflects extensive reforms and investments in higher education, especially in research, innovation, and academic excellence. According to the QS release, India's representation has grown significantly, with 21 new entrants in the 2025 rankings.
The rankings are based on 11 key performance indicators, including Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Faculty-Student Ratio, Citations per Paper, Papers per Faculty, International Faculty, International Students, Staff with PhDs, International Research Network, and exchange programs.

Under the Southern Asian category, IIT Kanpur shares the 6th spot with Pakistan's National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST) Islamabad. Indian universities account for seven of the top 10 positions in this category. This year’s rankings underscore India’s growing academic influence and the ongoing need for qualitative advancements to elevate more universities into Asia's top echelons.
