Almost every organization, big, medium, or small, has a structure, that helps in framing values and determining culture. But are all effective in defining roles clearly?  How long does decision-making take? - These are some serious questions to answer when defining an organizational structure.

Decentralization of Decision-Making: On the other hand, some organizations opt for a decentralized decision-making approach, where decision-making authority is distributed among various levels and departments. This allows for greater employee involvement and empowerment, as individuals closer to the front lines have the knowledge and expertise to make informed decisions.
  4. Standardization of Processes: Effective organizational structures include standardized processes and procedures. These processes ensure consistency and efficiency in how tasks are performed across the organization. 
  5. Effective Communication Channels: Clear and efficient communication channels are essential to organizational structure. They allow for effective information flow, collaboration, and coordination among individuals and departments.
  6. Employee Involvement: An effective organizational structure encourages employee involvement and participation. This helps to foster a sense of ownership and commitment among employees, leading to increased motivation and productivity.

Types of Organizational Structure 

  1. Functional Structure: A functional organization structure is divided into different functional areas or departments based on their specific tasks or functions. This approach allows for specialization and expertise within each department, leading to increased efficiency.
  2. Matrix Structure: A matrix organizational structure combines elements of both functional and project-based structures. In a matrix structure, employees are grouped by both function and project, allowing for cross-functional collaboration and efficient use of resources.
  3. Product Structure: In a product structure, the organization is divided based on different products or product lines. This allows for a focus on specific product-related goals and objectives, as well as streamlined decision-making and resource allocation for each product line.
  4. Divisional or M-Form Structure: The organization in a divisional structure is divided into separate divisions based on different geographic locations, products, or business units. This allows for more autonomy and flexibility within each division, as well as a better alignment of resources and strategies with the specific needs of each division.
  5. Flat Structure: In a flat structure, the organization has few or no layers of management. This promotes a more collaborative and egalitarian work environment, where decision-making is decentralized, and employees have greater autonomy and responsibility.
