CTET Eligibility 2026: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct the 21st edition of the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) on February 8, 2026. The detailed CTET notification and application form has been released at ctet.nic.in. Candidates will be required to undertake the CTET registration to appear for the exam. The last date to apply for the CBSE CTET 2026 is December 18. The CBSE accepts applications only from those candidates who fulfil the CTET eligibility criteria 2026. To be eligible to fill out the online form for the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET), candidates need to fulfil the prescribed educational qualifications for Paper 1 and Paper 2. For instance, for CTET Paper 1, candidates must clear the Class 12 exam with a minimum of 50% marks along with DElEd/ BElEd/ BEd. For CTET Paper 2, candidates need a Bachelor's degree with DElEd/ BElEd/ BEd.

No CTET Exam for Classes 9 to 12 before 2027: NCTE

The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has confirmed that the CTET exam will not be conducted for Classes 9 to 12 until 2027. The NCTE will consider conducting the CTET exam at four levels after 2027, that is, when the first batch of ITEP graduates.

Q:   What are CTET qualifying marks for the OBC category?
A:
The CTET qualifying marks for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category is 55 per cent. OBC candidates need to obtain 82 marks out of the total 150 marks to qualify the exam. A 81 mark scorer OBC candidate will fail to clear the exam.
Q:   What are the qualifying marks for CTET exam?
A:

The CTET qualifying marks are different for different categories. General category candidates need to obtain a minimum of 60 per cent or above marks in the CTET 2025 exam in order to be considered as a CTET pass. The CTET passing marks for OBC/SC/ST category candidates are 55 per cent. Candidates scoring more than or equal to the qualifying marks are considered CTET qualified. Only those candidates are awarded the CTET Certificate those who secure the minimum qualifying marks. However, a higher CTET score is advantageous in the further teacher recruitment process.

A:
The CTET passing marks for the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) categories is 55 per cent. The SSC & ST categories candidates need to obtain 82 out of the total 150 marks to qualify the exam and obtain the eligibility Certificate.

NCTE CTET Eligibility 2026: Minimum Qualifications to Appear for Exam

CTET Eligibility 2026: New CTET Eligibility Criterion Added by CBSE

'Post-Graduation with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade and three-year integrated BEd - MEd'

As per the above-mentioned criterion, candidates who have obtained a minimum of 55 per cent marks in the post-graduation with a three-year integrated BEd-MEd course from any NCTE-recognised institution are eligible to appear for the CTET 2026 exam and will be considered eligible to apply for Classes 1 to 5 teachers. However, the condition that prevails is that such candidates need to mandatorily undergo a six-month Bridge Course in Elementary Education within two years of their appointment.

CTET Eligibility Criteria 2026: Educational Qualification for Papers 1 & 2

CTET eligibility for Paper 1 (primary teachers) and Paper 2 (elementary teachers) is different. Go through the details below:

CTET Educational Qualification 2026 for Paper 1 (Primary Teachers)

To be qualified for being a primary teacher of classes 1 to 5, applicants must meet any one of the given CTET eligibility criteria in terms of education qualification:

  • Senior Secondary with at least 50% marks and 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education
  • Senior Secondary with at least 45% marks and 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education, in accordance with the NCTE (Recognition Norms and Procedure), Regulations 2002
  • Senior Secondary with at least 50% marks and d 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEIEd)
  • Senior Secondary with at least 50% marks and 2 year Diploma in Special Education
  • Graduation and 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education

Note: Candidates who have obtained the BEd degree from any NCTE-recognised institution need to mandatorily undergo a six-month Bridge Course in Elementary Education recognized by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) within two years after being appointed as a primary teacher.

CTET Educational Qualification 2026 for Paper 2 (Elementary Teachers)

To be qualified for appointment as an elementary teacher of classes 6 to 8, applicants must meet any one of the given CTET eligibility criteria in terms of education qualification:

  • Graduation and 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education
  • Graduation with at least 50% marks and 1-year BEd
  • Graduation with at least 45% marks and 1-year BEd, in accordance with the NCTE (Recognition Norms and Procedure), Regulations 2002
  • Senior Secondary with at least 50% marks and d 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEIEd)/ BA/ BAEd/ BScEd
  • Graduation with at least 50% marks and 1-year BEd (Special Education)

Note: The minimum marks shared above are relaxed up to 5% for reserved categories SC, ST, OBC and PH.

CTET 2026 Exam Eligibility: Number of Attempts

There is no fixed limit on the number of attempts in the CTET 2026 examination. Candidates can appear for the CTET exam any number of times till they obtain the desired scores. 

CTET 2026 Eligibility: Associated Parameters

Check below the other parameters related to CTET eligibility:

  • A diploma/degree in teacher education pursued by candidates should be mandatorily recognised by NCTE.
  • In the case of a Diploma in Education (Special Education) and BEd (Special Education), a teacher education course recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) only shall be considered.
  • A candidate with a Diploma in Special Education needs to undergo, after appointment, an NCTE-recognised six-month Special Programme in Elementary Education.
  • Applicants are chosen as teachers of Physical Education according to the regulations and norms laid down by NCTE.
  • For teachers of Art Education, Craft Education, Home Science, Work Education, etc., norms by other school management and the state government are applicable until NCTE lays down its minimum eligibility norms with such teachers.

Candidates who gain the minimum qualifying marks are declared qualified in the CTET exam. General Category candidates need to obtain 60 per cent marks.
