GATE 2017 Topper Interview: Anirudh Tripathi AIR 1 - Production & Industrial Engg

Currently pursuing his BTech in Production and Industrial Engineering, Anirudh Tripathi of Haldwani, Uttarakhand emerged as the branch topper with an AIR 1 in GATE 2017. IIT Roorkee declared GATE 2017 results on March 26.

According to this topper, smart work combined with constant effort led him to his success the exam. Cracking the exam in the very first attempt, Anirudh secured a score of 968 out of 1000 in GATE 2017.

An automobile enthusiast, he loves playing every sport but hockey is his favorite. In a candid chat with Shiksha, Anirudh talks about his success mantra, preparation strategy and plans for the future. Read the full interview below.

Q. Congratulations. So, how do feel securing AIR 1 in GATE 2017 - PI (Production and Industrial Engineering) branch?

A. It feels great to have been paid off well for all my efforts.

Q. Were you expecting to bag AIR 1?

A. Yes, indeed I was. I’ve worked very hard for this.

Q. Tell us about your educational background

I completed my 10^th and 12^th from Aryaman Vikram Birla Institute of learning, Haldwani, Uttarakhand. I scored a CGPA of 9.8 in Class 10^th. In class 12th I scored 88.6%.

I am pursuing my BTech from G.B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology. Currently, I have a CGPA of 7.40 in my BTech programme.

Q. Is this your first attempt?

Yes. This was my first attempt at GATE.

Q. What is your GATE score and normalised marks?

My GATE score is 968/1000 and normalized score is 80.02/100.

Q. Did you take coaching classes?

No. I did not. I did all the preparation via self-study.

Q. Is it necessary to take coaching classes or is self-study enough?

It depends on the student actually. What worked for me was a combination of self-study and online test series. It did the trick.

Q. How long have you been preparing for the exam?

I had been preparing for GATE for a year.

Q. What was your study plan like? Suggest important books and topics too.

I made regular and precise notes of every subject which was the only reason I was able to do revision of every topic very easily.

I practised as many as questions as possible especially of subjects like industrial engineering and manufacturing.

I gave more emphasis to time management and regular practice of online calculator helped me complete my exam before time without any silly mistakes.

Topics like machining and quality control should be given more emphasis.

Q. What is the difference between your UG exams and GATE 2017?

UG exams mainly focus on our theoretical knowledge while on the other hand GATE demands one to be able to apply that knowledge.

Q. What do you plan to do next?

I want to pursue my Masters from a reputed college related to my branch.

Q. When did you decide to take GATE? And why GATE?

During my 2nd and 3nd year I developed a keen interest in my subjects which made me opt for GATE.

Q. Any tips for students taking the exam next year?

Besides hard work, I would recommend that smart work must also be given emphasis.

Q. Tell us something about yourself, your hobbies and your family.

I am from Haldwani, Uttarakhand. I am doing B.Tech in industrial and production engineering from College of technology, GB pant University Pantnagar, Uttarakhand.

I live with my mother and my sister who is pursuing B.Tech in ECE.
