GATE Mechanical Engineering Syllabus 2027

According to the revised GATE syllabus 2027, the core structure of ME syllabus has not changed. It is still organised into 4 sections:

  • Engineering Mathematics

  • Applied Mechanics and Design

  • Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Design

  • Materials, Manufacturing, and Industrial Engineering

For GATE 2027, IIT Madras have included many new topics, such as two-degree-of-freedom vibration systems, control systems, PID controllers, combustion basics, composites and ceramics, automation with PLCs,  and Six sigma, while trimming a few older topics like Lagrange's equation and Heisler's charts. Candidates are advised to go through the GATE Mechanical Engineering Syllabus 2027 carefully.

GATE 2027 Mechanical Engineering Question Paper: Section-Wise Weightage

Based on the past GATE ME question paper, candidates can check expected section-wise weightage and important topics they can expect in GATE 2027.

Section

Section-wise weightage

Important topics

Engineering Mathematics

13 to 15 marks

Linear algebra, calculus, differential equations, complex variables, probability, numerical methods

Applied Mechanics and Design

15 to 17 marks

Engineering mechanics, mechanics of materials, theory of machines, vibrations, machine design

Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Sciences

27 to 29 marks

Fluid mechanics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, power/refrigeration cycles, turbomachinery

Materials, Manufacturing, and Industrial Engineering

27 to 29 marks

Engineering materials, casting/forming/joining, machining, metrology, CAD/CAM, production planning, operations research

Along with the above syllabus, GATE ME question paper also consists of General Aptitude questions of 15 marks.

What to expect in GATE 2027 Mechanical Engineering: Difficulty Level Analysis

Fluid mechanics, thermal sciences, and materials, manufacturing, and industrial engineering sections hold maximum weightage in GATE Mechanical Engineering (ME) question paper

  • Based on past five year’s GATE ME exam question papers, expect a heavy mix of formula-based numerical questions across all sections.

  • Expect numerical questions from thermodynamics (cycle analysis, entropy/availability) and Heat-transfer (conduction/convection correlations)

  • Operations Research (LPP, transportation, assignment, PERT/CPM) tends to have straightforward, formula-driven numericals

  • Questions related to bending/shear/tension/ and gear trains, vibrations, etc. are high-yeilding topics

  • Expect at least two to three questions combining multiple concepts

Candidates are advised to spend at least 60% of your time on high-weightage GATE Mechanical Engineering topics.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   Is General Aptitude section same for all GATE subject test papers?
A:

Yes, GATE General Aptitude is common for all papers. The general aptitude section carries 15 marks out 100 marks, comprising 10 questions in total. The section mainly tests candidates' analytical and thinking skills in the exam. Here's a breakdown of the GATE General breakdown of questions -

  • The GA section includes 5 questions of 1 mark and
  • 5 questions of 2 marks.

The GATE marking scheme is the same for all.

Q:   Is there negative marking in GATE exam?
A:

Yes, GATE has negative marking for Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) only. In GATE question paper, MCQs will be of one and two marks. Hence, the marking scheme for such questions can be checked below -

  • For one mark MCQ - 1/3rd mark will be deducted
  • For two mark MCQ - 2/3rd mark will be deducted
Q:   Which branch GATE question paper is the toughest?
A:

Considering the past year's trends and experts analysis, GATE CSE, ECE, and EE papers are considered as the toughest papers in GATE exam. Here's why -
