One of the most common questions among engineering aspirants planning for BITS Pilani, Goa, or Hyderabad is: how many attempts are allowed for BITSAT? Based on this, students plan their long-term preparation, gap year decisions and even whether a student should appear for the exam in the first place.
How Many Attempts for BITSAT? - Unlike many national-level entrance tests, BITSAT has a specified number of sessions and the number of attempts over multiple academic years. BITSAT allows only two attempts in two consecutive years. In each year, the authority holds two sessions of the BITSAT exam. So in all, a student has 4 attempts for the BITSAT exam.

How Many Attempts Are Allowed for BITSAT?
The Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences (BITS) Pilani conducts the BITSAT exam in two sessions in an academic year. Candidates have the choice to appear for any one or both sessions. For this, students have to complete the BITSAT 2026 registration and pay the required fee as applicable. The BITSAT application form is available in online mode at admissions.bits-pilani.ac.in. The last date to submit the BITSAT 2026 application form for session 1 or both sessions is March 16, 2026. The eligibility criteria for BITSAT 2026 also specify that eligible candidates can take the exam in two consecutive years. Candidates can appear for the exam in:
- The year of passing class 12
- The immediately following year
No candidate is allowed to appear for BITSAT more than two consecutive years. If a student skips BITSAT in the first eligible year, then that chance is lost permanently.

What is Considered an Attempt in BITSAT?
First, let us understand what is considered an attempt in the BITSAT exam. An attempt means:
- Appearing for BITSAT in a particular academic year after passing Class 12
- Registering, downloading the admit card, and actually writing the exam
To break the tie in the BITSAT score, the Mathematics score will be considered first. For BPharm admissions, the Biology score will be considered. If these scores are still unable to break the tie, then other subject scores will be checked by the authorities.
The 12th standard PCM marks will be considered to break the tie in the BITSAT score. If the tie remains after checking the entrance exam subject-wise score, then the 12th standard qualifying exam marks will be used to break the tie.
No other exam scores will be accepted for BITSAT admissions. Students will be considered for admission based on their BITSAT exam scores. However, board toppers will be eligible for direct admission. A separate application process will be open for the board topper direct admission scheme.
BITSAT is conducted once every year, although the exam may have multiple sessions within that year. Appearing in more than one session in the same year does not count as multiple attempts. It still counts as one attempt for that year.
BITSAT Attempts vs JEE Main Attempts
| BITSAT | JEE Main |
|---|---|
| Up to 2 consecutive years |
Up to 3 consecutive years |
| Two sessions per year; Two attempts in two years |
Two sessions per year; Three attempts in three years |
| 4 attempts in total | 6 attempts in total |
Is There Any Category-Wise Relaxation in Attempts?
No, BITS, Pilani, does not have any category-wise relaxation in the attempt limit. Candidates must note that the BITSAT attempt limits are:
- Same for the General category
- Same for OBC, SC, ST
- Same for PwD candidates

Appearing in Both Sessions Count as Two Attempts?
No. The presence in the BITSAT examination in both sessions is not taken as a separate attempt. The reason is that the two sessions of the BITSAT examination are held in the same academic year. The BITSAT exam date 2026 has been announced online. The BITSAT 2026 Session 1 is going to take place from April 15 to 17, 2026, whereas the BITSAT 2026 Session 2 exam will be held from May 24 to 26, 2026.
Benefits of Appearing in Both Sessions of BITSAT
- Another Opportunity to Improve Score: Scoring improvement is the primary advantage of two-session tests. Candidates get one try at the exam, they can analyse their performance, change their strategy and appear for the exam again in the same academic year to improve their scores for admission.
- Best score is considered: Since entrance exams may vary slightly in difficulty across days, conducting the test in multiple sessions ensures that no single group of students is disadvantaged. The normalisation process, combined with the best-score policy, ensures a more equitable selection process.
- Preparation Advantage: From a preparation point of view, the gap between the two sessions allows students to adapt their strategy. Do mock test analysis, revision of high-weightage chapters, and improvement in speed and accuracy can make a measurable difference in the second attempt.
