Know how to prepare for Engineering Maths for the exam to be held in 2023. Get details on Shiksha.
Check out the topic-wise strategy to prepare for engineering mathematics in GATE exam 2023 slated to be held in February next year. Engineering mathematics is one of the compulsory subjects in GATE with a high weightage.
Engineering Mathematics holds key relevance in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2023 as the weightage given to this subject has been consistent over the years. Every year the weightage of this subject ranges between 12 and 15 marks. Engineering Mathematics, a wide subject covered in over four to five semesters during college time, needs a strategic preparation plan. The key to prepare for this subject is to make short notes and keep them handy with you or have a Formula Sheet so that you can look up a concept whenever you need it.

Know how to Prepare for Engineering Mathematics in GATE exam 2023

Take a look at the topic-wise strategy to prepare for engineering mathematics in the GATE exam.

Linear Algebra

While preparing for Linear Algebra, the focus must be on Eigenvalue Problems and also Matrix Algebra as almost every time there will be a question from either of these two topics. One must also remember the properties of eigenvalues like the relation between eigenvalues of two matrices which are inverse of each other and other similar properties. No need to get involved in the basis vectors and span of basis vectors to form an n-dimensional space as those concepts are absolutely unnecessary for GATE.

Calculus

Calculus can be basically divided into three categories:

  • Differential Calculus: It involves basic concepts of Limits, derivatives and application of derivatives such as Increasing, Decreasing functions and Maxima and Minima problems.
  • Integral Calculus: It involves indefinite and definite integrals and the properties of definite integrals. Also, you need to be very well versed with the concepts of multiple integrals like Double and Triple integrals and also Line, Surface and Volume Integrals.
  • Vector Calculus: It involves Gradient, Divergence and Curl and Vector Integral Theorems (Green’s, Gauss’s and Stokes Theorem) and there are lot many properties of each concept and you must remember all those to solve the problems faster like divergence of the curl is always zero, believe me, that these properties do come in handy in the exam.

Differential Equations

There are not many concepts in the differential equations as you can always check the solution by satisfying each option in the differential equation given in the problem statement but at the same time do remember some special differential equations like Bernoulli’s Equation and Euler Differential Equation.

Also, in the latest years questions based on the existence of solution and uniqueness theorem have been seen so they also need to be prepared.

Complex Functions

It is the smallest topic among all topics from Engineering Mathematics and the only important concepts are Cauchy-Riemann Equations for Analytic Functions and Residue Method of Integration and the rest of the topics are not necessary for GATE.

Q&A Icon
Commonly asked questions
Q:   I am in 2nd year of electrical engineering. How should I prepare for GATE?
A:
It is good that you have taken the initiative early. That shows your enthusiasm. Now that you have decided to take the test you must reflect the thought "Why exactly do I want to write GATE?" There are two perspectives to that question- 1. Decent score to get a good job 2. For further studies and if you are interested in research, it will be a good start. Since you are in your second year, try joining an institute for guidance and attend the classes. Prefer going to the crowded ones for a better GATE score and low understanding if you want an immediate job. (Or) Go to a private tutorial who have less number of students and give more specific interest in feeding in the basics or the base of fundamental engineering. Here you will learn how things work instead of mugging up formulae. Try searching for applications on your smart phone or laptop that keeps you updated about the exam. Believe me there are lot of such applications. Although still in second year I wont recommend you to waste time in interesting yet not so important topics in your curriculum Now these points that I mention will be of utmost importance. 1. Take down the syllabus of your specified course and stick to the syllabus. 2. Make sure you make one and only one notebook per subject, lets say its the fair notebook and you must keep it as a relic. Whatever you enter into this notebook should be very important points and no rough work or rubbish. Keep a rough note too to do those things. 3. Start watching videos from NPTEL. Its free and the best as far as I can go. 4. Once you start doing it enrol in a class and always attend it. Never miss a class. 5. Go slow take your time you have plenty of it.
Q:   What if a candidate faces difficulty downloading the GATE admit card?
A:
Students might face some problems while downloading the GATE hall ticket 2024. The problem might be due to slow internet connectivity or a heavy load on the server. In such situations, candidates should try downloading the admit card after a short duration. In case any candidate forgets their application ID/Enrollment ID or password, they can reset it. In case a candidate has forgotten their password, they can reset it from the GOAPS portal. Candidates need to click on the "Forgot Password" link, after which they will be redirected to create a new password. Know more:https://www.shiksha.com/engineering/gate-exam-admit-card.

Probability and Statistics

The general problems involving Probability can be prepped up by practice and there is no need to study much about them but you can always remember Baye’s Theorem, more focus should be on Random Variables like Poisson’s Distribution and other distributions. Statistics is also very important and you must remember to mean, median and mode concepts as well as the coefficient of co-relation, so do make short notes for each of these concepts.

The pre-requisite for probability is Permutation and Combination which you need a basic idea about and not up to JEE level.

Numerical Methods

Two things are important in this section one is the equation solving by methods like Newton-Raphson and Bisection Method and the other is the Numerical Integration technique by methods like Trapezoidal Rule and Simpson’s rule so do mug up the formulas for each of these methods and make good use of Calculator like you can form equations in the form of the answer of the previous step so that recursion becomes faster and more accurate.

Transform Theory

This chapter is just included in the Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE) and Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE) GATE curriculum and it includes Laplace, Fourier and Z-Transform. They can be better prepared from Signals and Systems books like Oppenheim and Wilsky.

If you are seeking admission in NIT Surathkal MTech, then GATE is mandatory. Students applying for non-MTech programmes do not need to appear for GATE. For M.Tech however, GATE followed by the centralised counselling is mandatory.
