Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras' BS Degree in Data Science and Applications, nearing its fourth year, has facilitated over 2,500 students in securing jobs or promotions. Additionally, more than 850 students have gained admission to prestigious Masters and PhD programs at universities like Cornell University, Georgia Institute of Technology in the US, and Aalto University in Finland. Some have even transitioned from their primary domain to fields like Computer Science or Data Science.
Launched in June 2020, this pioneering program allows students to enroll at IIT Madras without taking the highly competitive JEE. Currently, it boasts over 27,000 students from across India. The BS Degree is delivered online, with exams conducted in person at 150 centres nationwide and internationally. This approach has democratized access to IIT-quality higher education, overcoming obstacles related to geography and age.
Congratulating the program on its success, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said, “I am proud of the achievements of our BS data science program and its students. The program has opened the doors of IITM to anyone who is willing to work hard and is interested in learning. We hope to introduce more such programs to reach all sections of society.”
As of now, the application for IIT Madras BS Degree in Data Science and Applications is ongoing. The last date to apply for IIT Madras BS Degree is May 26, 2024. Those interested can apply through the website: study.iitm.ac.in/ds. The program ensures equitable access to education even for the socially and economically challenged sections by providing fee waivers and other forms of support.
IIT Madras BS Data Science Degree Fees
Tuition is fully waived for all female students with a family income under INR 5 lakh per annum (LPA) and male students with a family income of INR 1 LPA, supported by CSR contributions from companies such as Verizon, Renault Nissan, HSBC, Tata AIA, Sutherland, LTTS, L&T Thales, Dun & Bradstreet, Walmart, among others. This support also includes donations from private individuals and various government scholarship schemes. Over 3,645 students have benefited from these provisions, enabling them to concentrate solely on their studies without financial worries.
Elaborating on this, Prof. Andrew Thangaraj, Professor-In-Charge, BS (Data Science and Applications), IIT Madras, said, “It is noteworthy that the inaugural batch of the 4-year BS degree program is yet to complete their 4 years in the program and graduate. However, the remarkable accolades already achieved by these students are quite impressive. From gaining admission into esteemed universities to securing valuable research and internship opportunities with reputable companies, their accomplishments speak volumes about their potential and the program's quality.”
