What is JoSAA
JoSAA is the counselling authority which manages and regulates the seat allotment for admissions to all 23 IITs, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs, and 47 Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other-GFTIs).
The seats are allotted to candidates in IITs based their All India Rank in JEE Advanced considering the choices of colleges and courses they fill during JoSAA registration. In NITs, IIITs and GFTIs, the seats are allocated basis their rank in JEE Main.
The JoSAA 2026 seat allotment process will be carried out online in total 5 rounds. Candidates are categorized for seat allocation based on their category which include GEN, GEN-PwD, GEN-EWS, GEN-EWS-PwD, OBC-NCL, OBC-NCL-PwD, SC, SC-PwD, ST, ST-PwD. For the NITs, IIITs and GFTIs, seats are further distributed into Home State quota and Other States quota. Supernumerary seats are created specifically for female candidates in undergraduate programmes at all IITs and many NITs/IIITs to ensure gender balance of at least 20%. These seats are in a "Female-Only" pool and cannot be allocated to non-female candidates under any circumstances.

What is the JoSAA Provisional Seat Allotment Letter?
After each round of JoSAA seat allotment, candidates who are allotted a seat are issued a Provisional Seat Allotment Letter. It has to be downloaded from the official JoSAA portal. The provisional seat allotment letter is confirmed once the candidate completes all steps of online reporting, including document verification and fee payment.
How to Download the Provisional Seat Allotment Letter
Candidates can download their Provisional Seat Allotment Letter by following these steps:

- Click on the seat allotment link

Options Available After Receiving the Seat Allotment Letter: Online Reporting
Once the candidate receives the provisional seat allotment letter, they first need to complete the mandatory "Online Reporting" process. The online reporting involves:
- Accepting the seat and choosing Freeze/Float/Slide
- Uploading required documents
- Payment of seat acceptance fee
Candidates who do not completes these steps within the specified could lose their seat. Also, the candidate will not be considered for any subsequent rounds in JoSAA seat allotment and it will be treated as a rejection of the offer.
Exercising Options After Issuance of JoSAA Seat Allotment Letter
Candidates will have to exercise any one of the following option once the seat is allotted to candidates
Option 1: Freeze
Candidates have to select the “Freeze” option if they accepts the offered seat and do not wish to participate in further rounds while retaining the same seat. Such candidates are not considered in subsequent rounds. Freeze is the right choice when a candidate has received their preferred institute and course combination. Once a candidate opts for Freeze, this option cannot be changed under any circumstances.
Option 2: Float
Float means the candidate accepts the offered seat but indicates willingness to be considered for an academic program of higher preference in their choice list at any institute in subsequent rounds. If a seat of higher preference becomes available, the earlier allotted seat is automatically cancelled and the new seat is allotted. If no higher preference seat is available, the candidate retains the currently allotted seat and continues to be considered in further rounds.
Option 3: Slide
Slide means the candidate accepts the offered seat but indicates willingness to be considered for a higher-preference programme within the same institute in subsequent rounds. If such a seat is available in a later round, the earlier seat is cancelled and the new one is assigned. This option is suited for candidates satisfied with their institution but hoping for a better branch within it.
Candidates can change from Float to Slide/Freeze, and from Slide to Freeze, in all rounds except the last one. Once a candidate opts for Freeze, the option cannot be reversed to Float or Slide under any circumstances.
Option 4: Withdraw
Candidates who have accepted a seat can withdraw from the process starting from the 2nd round. For IITs, withdrawal is possible up to the 5th round. For the NIT+ system, withdrawal is possible up to Round 6. The withdrawal process involves logging into the JoSAA portal, submitting a request along with a signed declaration form, and confirming with an OTP. If the withdrawal request is accepted, the allocated seat is cancelled, and the candidate is not considered for subsequent JoSAA rounds.

JoSAA 2026 Seat Acceptance Fee: Payment Process and Steps
The Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) must be paid to secure the provisionally allotted seat. Without paying the SAF by the stipulated deadline, the allotted seat will be cancelled and the candidate will not be able to participate in subsequent rounds.
JoSAA 2026 Fee Structure
As per the official JoSAA FAQ document, candidates will have to pay seat acceptance fees as per their category. The category wise fee details are given here
- Candidates from SC, ST, GEN-PwD, GEN-EWS-PwD, OBC-NCL-PwD, SC-PwD, ST-PwD category have to pay INR 15,000
- All GEN, GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL candidates have to pay INR 30,000
Both amounts include INR 5,000 as JoSAA processing charges. For the NIT+ system, candidates must also pay a Partial Admission Fee (PAF) at the end of the 5th round. Non-payment of PAF is treated as a rejection of the offered seat. The PAF is not refundable and is adjusted against the institute admission fee.
Refund Policy
As per the details available at JoSAA portal, the seat acceptance fee once paid is not refundable. However, if a candidate withdraws from the seat allocation process, the SAF will be refunded after deducting JoSAA withdrawal processing charges of INR 7,000. If a seat is cancelled due to ineligibility or document discrepancy, the SAF is refunded after deducting the JoSAA processing charges of INR 5,000.

Candidates can check the instructions here to pay the JoSAA seat acceptance fees
- Log in to the JoSAA portal at josaa.nic.in using your credentials

- Download and save the payment receipt
- The payment receipt is a mandatory document for subsequent stages
Documents Required for JoSAA Online Reporting
Candidates can check here complete list of documents to be uploaded during JoSAA online reporting:
- Proof of Date of Birth (Birth Certificate, Class 10 Certificate, or Aadhaar Card)
- Class 12 marksheet (or equivalent)
- Certificate of category (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/GEN-EWS), if applicable
- State of Eligibility proof
- OCI/PIO certificate, if applicable
- Medical Certificate for PwD candidates
- UDID card, if applicable
- Photo identity proof

What Happens If Category Documents Are Invalid?
If category certificates (GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD) are found invalid or not produced, the candidate's category tag may be changed for seat allocation purposes. If the seat was allocated based on the invalid document, the seat is cancelled. However, if the invalidity is not due to willful forgery and the candidate still meets OPEN category requirements, the admission may be provisionally confirmed.
After All JoSAA Rounds: CSAB Counselling
After the completion of all JoSAA rounds, any remaining vacant seats in the NIT+ system are filled through CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) Special rounds at csab.nic.in. There are no further rounds or spot rounds at IITs after the final 6th round of JoSAA.

Army Institute of Technology does not participate in the standard JoSAA or CSAB center rounds for its BE course. The institute runs its own independent counseling portal to manage applications. Students must track notifications directly on the college website instead of central engineering portals.

NIT Raipur admissions for the BTech course typically begin in June, right after the JEE Advanced results are announced. The JoSAA portal opens for registration and choice filling during this time. You usually have about ten days to finalize your list of colleges. It is very important to stay updated

NIT Raipur partners with JoSAA to manage the seat allotment for the BTech programme in several rounds. The system looks at your JEE rank and your saved list of college preferences. If your rank matches the cutoff, you get a seat offer automatically. You can then choose to "Freeze" your seat or wait

No, students do not need to apply separately at IIT Ropar site after JoSAA counselling. This is because the institute follows a common admission process for its BTech course just like the other IITs.
