Sometimes, it becomes difficult for candidates to choose the right NEET preparation book to crack the NEET exam. This article helps in answering the question “Is NCERT enough for NEET?” Let us first understand why NCERT books are important for NEET exam preparation. NCERT books hold the central position for NEET preparation. Their importance cannot be ignored, whatever might happen and however much an aspirant may intend to work hard for it. Most of the questions in Biology, and a big chunk in Chemistry, essentially stem from what is written in NCERT, based on the lines, diagrams, and examples. Even for Physics, NCERT helps in building the basic understanding of formulas and concepts.

There is no denial of the fact that NEET NCERT books are the primary resources for preparation. Even the NEET toppers have vouched for the importance of the NCERT books for NEET preparation. Even though they stated that they did not refer to any other books except the NCERT NEET books, it does not mean that one should study only from the NCERT books for NEET preparation. Q:   What is the distribution of questions in the Chemistry section of the NEET syllabus?
A:

The Chemistry section of NEET is divided into three sub-sections: Physical, Organic and Inorganic. The least number of questions are from Physical Chemistry. Inorganic and Organic Chemistry chapters have almost similar weightage. In terms of the ratio of Class 11 and Class 12 syllabus of NEET the latter has a higher weightage. The total number of questions asked from the Chemistry section will be 50, out of which 45 questions have to be attempted. The topics carrying high weightage in NEET based on last year's analysis are given in the table below.

Q:   Are NCERT books enough to complete the NEET syllabus?
A:

Yes, NCERT books are sufficient to complete the NEET syllabus. A number of past years' NEET toppers have claimed that they referred only to NCERT books for preparation. NCERT textbooks act as the base to complete the syllabus and develop conceptual clarity and understanding of the topics and chapters. However, for practice purposes, students may refer to other books and resources as well. It is advised that while starting the NEET preparation, candidates refer to the NCERT books and move towards other books and advanced resources after that.

Q:   Which books are really good for the preparation of NEET other than NCERT?
A:
The NCERT books help you in clearing your doubts regarding the concepts. Conceptual clarity is really important both for NEET and JEE exams. Other than that, you can refer to Arihant and MTG books. They have a good approach in the practice exercises and are all to the level of NEET only. They can help you a lot. Then in these books, you can refer to the previous years' questions and so you can get an idea of the questions and the type of questions that are repeated. Practice more and try to solve many questions in time. That will help you to get good marks which will eventually lead you to a good college through the NEET exam. All the best!

Finally, Are NCERT Books Enough for Cracking NEET 2026?

The answer to this question is “No”. NCERT books for NEET are enough to qualify for the examination, but to get a good score/ rank one must refer to other books as well. Since both AIIMS MBBS and JIPMER MBBS entrance exams have been merged with NEET, NTA has raised the bar for NEET. Both these examinations required extra effort and could not be cleared based on NCERT only.

Each NEET taker studies from the NCERT books since it is the basic requirement to qualify for the examination. But to raise the bar of preparation and performance in NEET, you must refer to other books and practice from the test series. Reference books play a major role in obtaining a high score and rank. Reference books and practice tests will give you an edge over the others.

It is important that one starts his/her preparation with NCERT books and moves towards reference books in the advanced stages of preparation. NEET preparation must be NCERT-focused and it must always be treated with utmost importance, but it is difficult to get great results if one relies solely on these books.

Practice Plays a Key Role

It would be wise for candidates not to explore multiple resources or books, as they tend to confuse them. They also need to get enough practice by solving previous years' NEET question papers and NEET mock tests. This will give them exposure to different types of questions and topic,s which will help them answer any kind of questions asked in the NEET question paper.

Q:   Why was the NEET 2024 syllabus changed?
A:

The National Testing Agency (NTA), had clarified the reason behind changing the NEET 2024 syllabus. NTA stated, "Due to the COVID-19 scenario, various School Boards deleted portions of each subject's syllabus. The deleted portion is still not being taken back by these Boards. The deletions were not uniform across various boards. Hence, a number of requests were received by the NTA for the revision of the syllabus." Last year, before the NEET exam, several students and parents asked NTA to release the rationalised NEET syllabus. Since the syllabus of NEET was already released before the rationalisation took place,
